Just a quick question...

I changed my oil yesterday. The last couple of times I started using Mobile1 10w-30 full synthetic. I have had real good success with this oil. This time I threw in 5w-30 full synthetic because it's still very cold here and I figured I'd use a thinner oil. Now my oil pressure light is coming on sometimes at idle. It's fine when it's running above idle, but when I come to a stop, it comes on. Do you think the thinner oil is causing this problem? I have checked my oil several times and it's at the pefect level. And also, do you think the oil will thicken up a bit over time and this problem should go away?

Yah your oil is too thin..... :thumbdown When you go 5w30 synthetic it is very this...Yes your oil will thinken as time goes on but i would get rid of it and run 10w30, as much as it was a waste of money i wouldnt want that low of oil pressure at idle...

Hmmm... I figured as much. I'm going to give it a day or two and see if the problem fixes itself. If it doesn't, I guess that's $20 down the toliet and I'm gonna have to drain and refill with 10w-30. Anyone else think this may not be the problem?

It's definately the problem. The 4G63 isn't like a Honda engine and doesn't like 5W-30 oil in fact I'm not sure if I have ever seen a turbocharged engine that called for 5W-30.

I use 0W-30 all the time in all sorts of engines(including my GST), and this has NEVER happened. The oil is not the culprit. Like Defiant said, check the pressure sensor etc.

I look at it this way. He didn't have problems until he changed to a lower viscosity oil so why would it be the sender? It would be cheaper to change back to 10W-30 than to buy a new sender. One thing we know about DSM's is that the oil pressure in your engine may not be the same as someone elses so you may get away with using low viscosity 0W-30 oil (not sure why you would use it unless you are in Alaska or something) but other people might not.

I can see that from your profile but thanks for confirming. We don't even use 0W-30 in Canada where it can get as cold as -40 deg C so I have no idea why you would use that oil in Florida. You do know that most high performance oils are of high viscosity (eg: 20W-50) right? Whatever works for you I guess.

Look into it- you'll find its mostly just the opposite.
