I have a 1996 Eclipse 2.0 DHOC, apparently the 420A Chrysler motor. The motor is dead and i am looking to do a swap. since this is my daily driver as well as my "now new" project, I need to know what motor, other than the allegedly junk 420a, will fit (preferably direct bolt on) in my car, and possibly to my existing 5 speed tranny. I have never done a jdm swap, and would love to put the 4g63t in my car, but i don't have awd and cant do the conversion for lack of want. Is there a motor for me out there, or will i need tranny too. I need help from anyone that will give it, i guess i just need to know what motor is best for me and what i might need to perform this swap. Any and all information will be greatly appreciated.

Your best option is to get another 420A and build it up as solid as possible. Swapping in a 4G63 is way more work than anyone wants to do. I don't know of any other motors that drop right in. Some of the N/A guys might chime in with more knowledge.

You could possibly get a one the bigger 420a from the neon or mini van. I forget the displacement but they did have like a 2.2 or a 2.4

Also strictly speaking these can not be JDMified. There not imports. There not even USDM (United States Domestic Market) version of a Japanese car. There American made cars with a Mitsubishi engine. I think they were all made in Illinois and then shipped to Japan.

Possible? Yes. For the OP, not likely. He'd be better trying to buy a 1g AWD and tuning it than buying Evo parts. :D

OP: I would look into what other motors chrystler made and see what they have. Ya might find a larger motor, or just be better to do as suggested above, and build what ya got.

well guys, i'm kinda strapped for cash and looking to go cheap, but i'm not a master mechanic. i know a rebuild is going to cost me more than a new motor if i take it to a shop. if i can find what motor can go in my eclipse with the least amount of resistance, i will be quite happy. I'm still stranded and looking to make my demon speed again. pls help

If your engine is really broken as you say, your cheapest and most reliable option is to shell out around $1000 or so to buy a used engine (exact same) and have it installed. Any custom work is going to be far more expensive, or poorly done. If that's beyond your budget too, then you need a bus pass and a for sale ad on craigslist.

Thanks for the laugh about getting a JDM replacement for your american engine in your american car. Made my morning; now I'll have a smile on my face while I build the custom exhaust for my AWD Colt.

hey, i'm just looking for options and if anyone has done a swap like this before. the condecending nature of the posts is quite rude. I got on here looking for help. If there are mods to be done to swap a "non-american" motor into my piece of shit american made eclipse, that's all i would like to know. I'm sure if this 420a is such a p.o.s. others must have done some sort of swap. I'd like that info. I just figure if i can get a 4g63t w/tranny, harness, ecu, shafts, pretty much everything i need for the motor and drivetrain, for around 3000, what do i need to put it in my "chrysler eclipse"?
