Well I'm pretty sure I am going to purchase this because my volt gauge goes crazy with the lights on.. My question is how hard is it to put on and is the Saturn alt. the best one to get? Also give me feedback on the kit :) thanks

It's a hugely popular mod that's been done by tons of DSMers. The kit comes with full instructions and I believe they have addtional pics on their website. There's also a really good, really long thread on this board on the install. Point is, if you follow the instructions, you can't go wrong. The main advantage to going with a Saturn alt is they tend to be cheaper new. That's pretty much the only advantage to going with Saturn, but in my opinion, they're just as good as an OEMer so that's all the advantage you need.

I'm gonna disagree with you here. The main advantage to using the Saturn alternator is for the increased amperage output. If you're running a high powered audio system, lots of electronics or just a very high horsepower car, it would make lots of sense.

I have done the Jay Racing swap on my car and the biggest pain in the ass is the removal of the intake manifold and rewiring of the alternator. The kit itself is super easy to install.

Curious as to why you think it will fix your problem. Volt gauges going crazy doesn't tell anyone anything. Not trying to be a dick but some of the internet diagnostics on here really gets me going. If all it takes to have a big loss of power is your lights you have a problem somewhere else. Yes Jays kit is amazing and have a higher output alternator is great(if you need the power, its not a bandaid).

It very well could mean his alternator is pooing out. But, you're right, not necessarily. It could be a bad ground, bad ecu, 12v to ground, etc. I would reccomend metering the output of the alt directly off the lug, with and without the lights on.

Going Saturn alternator is not only because of its amperage, But because it last longer and bumps up the amps faster then Mitsubishi alternators.

Mitsubishi's alternator gets damage by the exhaust heat, they can't keep up when boosting, that's why we replace them, not only because of the low amps, But because they stop charging around 30psi,...

Saturn alternators keep charging at that psi and can last more time then a real OEM Mitsu.

I used my OEM alternator for 6 years and never had a problem with it, But that's when I was 100% stock and didn't have any Sound, just factory,, once I start with mods and boosting, it didn't keep up, I replaced it 6 times in 1 year, then I upgrade to Galant 90amp and it last for 1 year, I replaced it again and change it 2 time more, and got so sick of it,,,,, Now I just swap to a GM Alternator and never will go back to Mitsu Alternator.

I'm with Miguel on this one, as I believe the Saturn alternator is more durable.

Reason being is I picked up a used original 1997 Saturn alternator from a yard for $45 with a bad rear bearing. 6 months in, I still get 14.2V at idle. Compared to my 12.9-13.2V idle and having to replace every few months Mitsubishi units. I also have the Megan 2.5" 02 housing sitting only a couple inches away and still have nothing but good things to say about the conversion. In fact, I'm the process of making a custom adjustment bracket (no more rigged up OEM bracket) and I also want to tap/helicoil the top mount hole for 8mmx1.25 so it's exactly the same as stock :D. Maybe I'll do an article on it...

I wouldn't relocate it though (just me here), I like my A/C in the summertime and not having to pull off a billion things to get to it. I built my car to enable easy work, not to be a pain in my ass...

How do you think the alternator has any clue how much boost pressure you're running? Why would that make a single bit of difference and magically at 30psi the alternator stops charging?

Sorry about not being more specific on that,.:ohdamn:

The PSI, is not really at 30 psi when the problem shows, but is at high rpm, and it's not that it stops working ether, But it puts only 12.3-12.5 Volts.;)

Fair enough. My initial thought was to say that the Saturn was BETTER than OEM (for a number of reasons) but I know there are diehard OEM types that insist there's no such thing as better than OEM and I didn't want these unfortunates to have a stroke or some other medical emergency.:)

There are a lot of OEM working perfectly, But there are more OEM that doesn't work very well,. Unfortunately, most of us are not lucky enough to find a good one, If I have to replace 20 Mitsu alternators in 2 years to find one good one, I would rather use one Saturn alternator and replace it in 2 years.

This is going out of control and I'm not going to argue on this any more, But make a research and as your self a question.

Just 10% uses OEM alternators, some have gone with aftermarket (High amp) and more of us have swapped to saturns, and there are some others that have gone with aftermarket (high amp) but still aftermarket saturn alternators. (this is with dsmers that are running mid power and/or using High amp systems on their sound).

So ask your self a question,

SHOULD I TAKE YOUR ADVICE TO GO OEM?, OR SHOULD I DO WITH WHAT OF MOST DSMERS ARE DOING?.

Search and you will see there are proofs of OEM mitsu alternators going bad, and you will find proofs of Alternators being better the mitsu.
