Is this normal DSM stuff?

Lets start by saying I am new to the DSM scene. I had a talon in high school but sold it quick. My sister had a tsi, but wrecked it quick and that was the end of that. Little did I know that the tsi was sitting in a barn at my dad's place just needing the body to be fixed. I took that project on last week and completed it, now I have the car back on the road. There are a few issues that I cannot figure out, but it may be normal?

1) Is it normal to hear a "boiling" sound coming from the engine, maybe the coolant getting too hot. It does not overheat at all, but it sounds like it is boiling.

2) there is no "boost" feeling. I had a boosted CRX running 8psi and this feels nothing like a boosted car. It gets about 7psi, but gradually, the turbo doesn't spool very fast, but by the time I am at 6500-7000rpm it is at 7psi, but that's it.

3) Is 7psi stock boost for a 1990 tsi?

4) The idle is not consistent. It sometimes like to idle at 2000, sometimes 750-1000, and sometimes it doesn't catch itself and it dies. Also it takes a while for it to idle down. When you rev it the rpms come down really slow, like it has a 200lb flywheel!!

5) It kinda chokes at the point between decelerating with compression and then re applying gas, is that normal?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. My wife is trying to get me to sell the car because of all the problems but I have a lot of fun with it and just want to see it run well. I don't want another DAMN civic!!!!!!!!!

good one, I didn't mess with the throttle. And no, just the opposite, the car was the guys commuter, it had like 160k when my sister got it. Now it has 180k. High miles but all maintence has been done.

That's a lot of miles. If you redo the compression test. Make sure it's warm and the throttle is open. If you still get the same amount of compression your rings and/or your valve seats are probably getting pretty worn. That's a lot of miles on these old motors.

does a 16g turbine housing fit my 14b? It says tdo5h on the listing but then it says 16g? I am confused, any help would be good

The listing?
Your 14b should also say tdo5h
Yes. A 16g's turbine housing will mate up to a 14b. But, I have not heard of any significant gains from doing so.

If you're planning on keeping it for a while, grab a 2g manifold. Should be cheap enough, performance gain too.

That doesn't look like a MHI (mitsubishi heavy industry) unit, they don't have the A/R cast into them. I don't know if it will work, but it's a knock off for sure.

I could imagine a lifter tick or something wrong with an accessory belt sounding like boiling. Does your coolant go away over time?

Have you done a boost leak test? That will probably solve a lot of problems.

Don't forget to disengage the inectors and spark by pulling the MPI relay and have all 4 spark plugs out of the holes when you do the compression test. Also, it may take 10 or more times turning over to get a decent reading. Mine does.

Sorry, I didn't take the time to read all of the replies, but while all this info is being tossed at you, I would recommend you spend some time reading the following websites. You'll learn just about everything you need to know about DSMs:

Good luck, and welcome to the wonderful world of DSMs! :thumb:

*EDIT* Oh, and one thing about the DSM community....every question that could ever be asked has been asked. This forum alone is HUGE! I often find it much faster to search for the answers than to post and wait for a reply.

^^ totaly agree with the above statement, use the search button there is always threads! One last thing, Grats on ## new/used DSM they are amazing machines! :thumb:

that sucks man!! might have to replace head...hopefully pistons are ok!! if not, time for a swap or an engine rebuild!!!

If you are going to fix the car, I would try to check the catalytic converter when things are up and running. If it is clogged it will cause a lot of the problems you were mentioning.

already removed the cat....... did not help. It is deffinitely the cracked turbo housing, its a much larger crack that I first thought. And yea, I am going to rebuild the motor. It had 180k on it and only 130psi. I figure doing a head swap is a few hours away from pulling the motor, so I might as well do it right the first time. Does anyone have suggestions on a reasonable rebuild kit?
