I'd like to know if this is an OEM Hydraulic Tensioner. Although you cannot see it in the picture, the piston (or whatever it is) is marked 10/2008 on it. It wiped off on when I touched it.

I have a pretty good talent for telling if something is new or not by looking at the amount of dirt around it relative to the rest of the car.

Also, I see a ring attaching two holes on the tensioner if you are buying it brand new. Would the ring or any other parts possibly be stuck to the car? I'd like to find missing parts NOW before I forget about them.

I'd like to consider just reusing this tensioner. Sorry, I don't think that $100+ dollars for a new tensioner is a great deal. I already know the ramifications of the tensioner failing but this is my view for now.

Thanks for any input.

Hmmm $100 tensioner vs. destroying a whole motor using the old one??? I don't see where the problems at bro. The tensioner looks old, also you didn't put the grenade pin back in before removal, so I imagine the tensioner shot out and that can cause damage. If your doing a timing job don't skimp out bro change the dang thing and do it right the first time. Trust me I've had my dsm for 15 years, I've learned the hard way a few times LOL.

Lol, add that to the price of all the other parts required to do a timing belt and I dunno it kind of irks me that just this one tiny part costs $100. Part is only 5 years old. The date says late 2008 on it. You can blow that engine up by missing anything anywhere.

Anyways, had to get that out. Not discounting your advice...just a little pissed. The grenade pin eh?
