I am going to look at this vehicle and possibly purchase. It's a 91 GSX. After I emailed him he says that he thinks the timing is out  . My question is does that mean there is a good chance the valves and stuff are bent? I emailed him again after he told me about the timing, if he could be more elaborate on what he means. So I'm not exactly sure what he meant. So if it did need a new timing belt and head is it still worth it? Please let me know. I have been dying to get a DSM before my newborn comes. Here is the ad below. Thanks for your help.

1200 or best offer.

130,000 miles
Exterior: Blue with silver trim. 7/ 10 - normal wear for age
Interior: Grey leather seats. 7 / 10 as the leather seats are worn.
Factory sunroof
New tires. Stock mag wheels.

Car has been used as a daily driver by my wife. I purchased the car
from a co-worker in Phoenix 3 years ago.

We live in the east mtns so the car gets driven about 60 miles per day.
Recent gas milage has registered a consistant 28mpg - My wife is 40 and
drives accordingly.

Engine is starting to run rough so something is going on that I am unable to detect/fix - It's time for a newer car for us anyway. If you are good with cars, this should be a good one to fix and keep.

Engine compartment is spotless.

Serious calls only please.

At 28mpg, Im thinking this is an N/T model. A turbo DSM cannot touch that fuel efficiency.

A 420A motor is not like a 4G63 that requires a mandatory timing belt replacement every 60K miles. The turbo engine is an interferance engine and a slight off on the belt will send internals smacking into each other. If it needs a timing belt change, being an N/T, the valves sould be ok since it is not an interferance engine.

Take a mechanic with you to go through the car. Carfax will help too but it wil never uncover rust, mechanical problems and things that might add up when repaired.

I was kinda thinking that. But his ad states it's an AWD but then again he hasn't emailed me if it's a turbo or not. I asked him if there is shaft play in the 14B but all I got was the timing issue. Let me give him a call.

No answer.....

If it's 91 N/T it wont have the 420A it will have a 4G63 N/t Motor or the 1.8 SOHC and on the note of it not being a turbo cause of gas mileage i get about 30 on the highway with my GST. And about the timing problem if you get lucky and the belt broke when he was trying to start it there is a good chance that it doesnt have bent valves but if it jumped time or broke when it was being driven count on a head rebuild :dsm:

Well I talked to him and he said its a AWD Turbo, He had the turbo replaced at 70K brand new. He said he gets alot of q's about the 28mpg but says that is what there registering. They drive it on the highway. He did say the timing is off a tooth and not at TDC with the flywheel but still starts? Just running ruff. But wouldn't 1 notch off bend the valves or mess with the head ?? Thanks for the help guys

BTW the timing belt did not break just off a tooth...
