Hi guy's ,

Recently , Ive just installed an HKS SSQV on my 94 and im wondering if the sound im having is compressor surge or just flutter? My back screw is almost all close behind the bov. The BOV is vented since im running a GM maf/Maft combo.

Here's a clip (not my car) but my car does the same sound as his car. Also does it if im brake torqueing of the line and let of the gas.

So is it compressor surge?

Here's the video

I think that is just the noise the BOV makes, my blitz kinda chatters like that... so I hope its no comp surge, but Im pretty sure its not.

Sounds just like my Buick with no blow off valve at all, that's definately compressor surge.

The HKS BOV sounds like that. The "Sequential" part of the SSV means that it'll open up at different levels. At lower pressures, you'll hear the fluttering sound like what you're experiencing. At higher pressures, it's a really high pitched blow off (the trademark sound).

do you know the mods that are done to the s14 i would like to know

this is a swedish car=) its called muppen =) its build by madtech (www.madtech.se)
i know it has a bmw m3 tranny since the original didnt make it it also did 628,5 hp on pump and 765,1 hp and 772 nm on race gas

So, THATS what the HKS SSQ sounds like? Damm....i kinda like :D That fluttering doesnt sound like its coming back from the intake, it just sounds like the BOV making its noises. It kinda sounds like some high end drag cars you would hear at a NOPI, with the fluttering and all. I may have to look into one of those BOV's :D I also thought compressor surge mainly occured as a result of the BOV not opening, but I could easily be wrong

alot of SR20 powered cars run without BOV. They use the logic that with out releiving that pressure you can maintain a higher boost than if you let out the pressure and started over again. It's a very commonly used practice in the drift community. IF you ever get to see a prfessional D1 car or something you will notice very few of them use BOV's.

Are you running the HKS BOV?

Nope, when I chose my cbv I looked at what hp levels I would be at, I also wanted one that would easily recirc (as opposed to having to buy a recirc kit) and basically just wanted one that was suited to my particular application... Not the coolest "sounding" bov.

The "fluttering" that you hear is compressor surge, if you don't know that then put a blockoff plate over your HKS flange and do a WOT pulll..... Oooooh, listen to that sweet HKS sound, but wait... The HKS is off??? Under higher boost levels the valve will open all the way and you won't hear the fluttering, but under lower boost levels you get that fluttering. It's because the valve is not opening or not opening ALL the way, and you hear compressor surge. Just thought I'd share :thumb:

So, is the problem compressor surge, or the ssq? I hear that sound from the drag cars, but I don't think some even run a bov. From everyone's comments, it looks like it is a combo of ssq sound and surge.

I don't think on that car, the surge is a problem. Probably on dual ball bearing turbo. Those can spin backward with no problem. No thrust bearing to damage. :thumb:

no better way to break in a motor than to do some donuts.

BTW. Im really digging that idle, it so nice and smoot.

Are you sure about this? from HKS website:
"... the HKS SSQV incorporates both a small primary valve for ultra quick activation, along with a larger secondary valve for additional discharge capacity. The SSQV is engineered to initially open the small primary valve at light throttle and load conditions, then sequentially opens the secondary valve for additional relief capacity under high boost and load conditions."

Are you saying that the small primary valve does not relieve enough boost at low boost conditions? I'm not asking this to make controversy (well, maybe just a little ;) ), I'm asking because I just bought a SSQV and I'm concerned for the safety of my motor.

the ssq is a great bov, if not the best, I dont know where there are people knocking on them. Dont get your panties in a bunch, your motor will eb fine.

I am not saying you are suffing from compressor surge, but that guy sure is. If thats the way the hks sounds I sure am glad I have a greddy type-s much sweeter sound. :)

On another note that guy must sure love to buy tires. I guess there cheaper over there than in the states.

damn...my Greddy Type R sounds EXACTLY like that and im running 13psi...huh, who woulda thought that...

The frequency of the fluttering would dictate that it is just the BOV. Real compressor surge is a little deeper and spaced a bit farther, especially on a FMIC. Anyone with a SSQV can say that is a normal sound from the BOV...just because it flutters does not mean surge, I am disappointed to hear otherwise from some of you guys.

my friend put a t3/t4 on his gf's ford escort, and there is no bov on that setup. that noise in the video is the same noise my friend's gf's car makes with no bov, and that is compressor surge. just because your hks ssqv makes a similar noise does not mean it is surging though. they do make a flutter noise as far as i know. make sure you have the thing hooked up right.

edit...
/me watches video again :D
