Is my oil pressure too high?

Just installed a prosport oil pressure gauge as my factory one was not working (hasn't worked since I bought the car). Let me just say that the gauge itself is great, nice quality. I had 40 psi at idle while cold. While the car was still cold, the pressure would rise a great amount with just a little acceleration up to 100 at 3/4 throttle. When the car was warmed up, the needle was at 18-20. It still seemed pretty touchy, and it did go 100+ when I was at about 4500 giving full throttle. I havn't had the side cover off yet to see if the balance shaft has been taken off, but the car does seem shaky at idle. Keep in mind that I don't know what one with or without a balance shaft would feel like, but I wouldn't be suprised if it was removed as the car has had many owners. I just wanted to know if this was normal, and if not, what would cause this?

Thanks!

If you did the balance shaft delete, then you will need to port the oil pump pressure return area.

If you still have the balance shafts, then you might want to try a lighter weight oil.

Your pressure seems normal at a cold idle. It is very touchy until warmed up. Most consider 100 psi too much under full throttle. I would guess you probably do have your balance shafts taken out. If you do, the remedy for this problem is to port your oil relief valve.

What would be the consequences of not porting the relief valve? I only ask because who knows how long it's been like this because the stock gauge never worked for me or the last owner.

Well from my understanding the actual pressure should be ok. The problem lies wherein the pressure is that great you can blow the oil filter gasket or other gaskets and leak all of your oil. The pressure inside the engine should not affect anything mechanical. As long as you dont have any oil leaks then you should be ok. I would look into porting the valve if you are getting consistent oil pressure over 100 psi at wot.

I'm not sure of the accuracy though. Now that I think of it, I only drove the car for about 5-7 minutes. It was up to temp, but i don't think thats enough time for the oil to get completely warm.

about those oil leaks...
