Is my engine blown?

For a couple of days now my engine has been making a ticking sound, sounded like lifter tick, but today I noticed that my oil dipstick had popped out a bit (blow by I think) and after about 10 mins of driving while stopped at a red light my engine started idling low, about 500 rpms, and then just turned off but I was able to turn it back on and continue driving but soon after the ticking noise got much louder.

Well soon after that I was on the freeway doing about 70mph when my engine just died and I saw a puff of white smoke coming out of my exhaust. After I pulled over I popped my hood and saw some smoke coming from around the throttle body/valve area and then I looked under the car to see if there are any leaks and there was a bunch of oil underneath.

So what do you guys think it is?

A pcv that is bad will cause the dipstick to pop up, but so will excessive blow by. As of your ticking, it could be a couple of things, like a spun bearing or even a balance shaft that is starting to seize up. Need more information. Hows your oil level and what was your oil pressure when it died.

The oil level was full, it was changed last week but for the past couple of weeks the pressure seemed on the low side and I happend to glance at the pressure gauge about 10 seconds before it blew and it was low.

One thing I forgot to mention is that after the engine died when I tried to start it up my thermostat was showing high heat, about 3/4 to the max, I have never had any overheating problems with this car and since their was obvious problems today I was watching all guages constantly and had no out of normal heat readings until after the engine died.

do you have liquid on the top half the motor may not have anything to measure so it show up fine

I haven't taken it apart yet, this happend late at night and the sun still isn't up over here so I'll get a better look at it in a few hours after I get some shut eye. Thanks for your help guys I'll follow up with what I find out later today.

ewww..... i hate to say it, but you may have wiped it...

similar situation, highway cruising, sustained RPM's slight knock becomes more evident, chucks a rod through the block....

When you say there was oil under the car, was it on the ground or just on the car?

Also, when it died and you saw the puff of white, did the engine jam to a stop or did it just cut off?

If there was oil under the car, and filter was tight, no other evident leaks, i'd say there is probably a rod-sized hole somewhere...

If it just quit running and you saw the smoke, it could have been headgasket giving out... quick cocktail of no compression and mixture of bodily fluids into combustion chamber...

Other question, did you change anything on the car before this happened? Boost level, etc. Also you said you recently had the oil changed, did you say if you checked it after the car died?

I had the same issue in October, and i just added to much oil. It turned out it caused my turbo to blow up. Didnt really bother me it was a good excuse to put a better on in there.

Pull your oil pan, and check your Rod Bearings. I had a similar problem when i pulled the oil pan the bearings were shot. As long as there is no damage to the crank or rods get some new bearings for around 30 bucks and replace them.
This is actually a good thing for anyone to do. If you have the oil pan off you may as well go ahead and replace the rod bearings.

Sounds expensive, you may just have some pretty gargae furniture now.

Take it apart, find out what happened. I thought I had a spun bearing but it turned out a bolt backed out of the water pump pulley and was making a tick noise.

I was relieved. So I put the money towards a new 16g, and evo3 mani.

this is just a wim but check your fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose if there is gas in it thats a problem this happen to me and hydro locked my motor.replaced regulator and car ran fine .also take plugs out and turn it over to see if fuel or water comes out this could help diagnose the problem.goodluck
