Is it possible to do a partial tranny rebuild with the tranny in the car?
I know its possble in some cars, its mainly just the room factor. I just dont want to pull the engine/tranny to do some minor work.

It is possible, but not much fun.

If you're actually replacing synchros or gears, pull the tranny. It'll be much easier when you're clearencing the bearings (which you ARE doing, right?)

Otherwise, many people replace blown spider gears and other things like that without pulling the trans.

I'm just swapping the entire input assembly. I really dont care if the tranny goes bye-bye in a month or two (hopefully lasts thru the race season). Shep will be getting both trannies in October sometime, and hopefully there will be enough good parts to get me 1 tranny. With swapping out the hole assembly there shouldnt be to much clearancing involved-right?

All the parts going in are from a good tranny with a broken bell housing. The morons that had the car before me didnt realize that you had to drop the transfer case to separate the motor from the tranny.

I've done input shafts with the tranny in the car on autos-thats NOT much fun.

Unfortunately, you would want to clearance the bearings from the races for it to be done right. If you were using the same case, I would say you could wing it, but since your swapping guts from one case to the other, there's no way to know if the spacers put the clearances anywhere near spec. It would probably run for awhile if you didn't, though.

If I were doing it, I would probably pull the tranny and plastigauge the one (or two... can't remember) bearings on the input assy, just to do it right. That way, you'll have a good trans to use while Shep's working his magic, and a good trans to sell when you swap your magic tranny in.

Otherwise, I'd use the smaller of the spacers you can find. I'd rather have it too loose and have a little play (which happens naturally when parts wear) than too tight and have a lack of oiling.
