I always heard that all 7 bolts had a good chance of getting crankwalk! recently I started to hear that it was only 95-98!

I have a 99 and Im not sure If I should build the motor up :thumb: or not waste my time with it! :thumbdown

Is 99 somehow saved from crankwalk?

no 99 models are also prone to crankwalking, but the years least impacted seam to be the newer ones. however those years havent been around as long and havent had as many miles on them, so people are still speculating to how prone to crankwalk they actually are. As far as my advice goes i have a 1996 talon tsi awd, my car is one of the "more prone" to crankwalk years..and it just hit 120,000, i had the crankshaft check when my timing belt was done..still in spec. Dont fix something thats not broke. Set money aside incase something happens, or build a 6 bolt on the side, but dont stress about something that may never happen. It is said that higher performance clutches increase the chance of crankwalk..so dont go getting a 2900 clutch or something....

DO NOT FEAR THE CRANKWALK!

thanx for the info!

the reason Im asking is because my cylinders 2 and 3 rings are out! I was gonna go ahead and just do je piston and eagle rods on it!

With the late model 98's/99, they changed the thrust bearing design which seems to have helped quite abit. However, they can still get crankwalk...but not nearly as likely. There was a local guy here whose 99 walked. With that said, a friend locall has a built 7 bolt making big power (500 plus) and he hasn't had any problems.

Hello - I like this question alot - I was actually going to ask it- I have searched around and never found a 99 that walked I'm sure there are some though - But hey there are six bolts that walked- I have a 99 and I'm at 295hp at the wheels now with a best 1/4 of 12.9 and going for 400 with the green - I hope it wont walk but I will be ready for it- hope for the best - expect the worst! I'm also only at 45k- We will see - The tranny will be done before it walks though but thats a whole other thread - I have heard that the 97's are really bad for walking- But who knows my friend has a 97x and it never runs right- He never even drives the thing, never beats it and its always in the shop - I beat the $hit out of mine and I never a'm - It all depends on the car-

Crankwalk is OVERRATED! Like was said before hope for the best and expect the worst, but I don't think the worst is all in the engine. Many things can go wrong with a car and some of them can even cost more and take more time. Drive your car how you want to and mod it how you want to, but when things break get ready to fix them. It's all part of owning a fragile car like a DSM. I should know...I just got my car back from being nine weeks down from a cracked head and now it is sitting at my buddy's shop because the control arm took a huge shit on me.

No, they all walk without fail. Every last one of them. You have no recourse. Sell yours while you still can.

I wouldn't as far as selling it- Buy a 6 bolt build it and bolt on an fp30532- - What mods were on the 97?

Please try and detect the HEAVY sarcasim noted in his post, please. Then again everytime somebody asks about crankwalk I feel like telling them to sell their car and buy another too.

Hey man- I see in your profile you want the 264/272 - Why wouldn't you go with the 272/272- I'm hoping for a time near yours with my fp green- What psi are you at and did you dyno it?? If so how much hp???

4g63s of all years can walk, sr20dets can walk, gm small blocks can walk, gm big blocks can walk, any car can walk at any time... its just that some cars are more prone to it. does that mean you shouldnt build your motor up? no! absolutely not! drive it till it breaks, then fix it!

Never dyno'd, but it did run a best of 14.0 last year, before I'd added a 17psi wastegate actuator (which DEFINITELY improved things), replaced a leaking master cylinder which was screwing with my launches, and added DSMLink. ACT 2600, fidanza flywheel, no balance shafts, and underdrive pulley; stock T-25, intercooler, head, intake/exhaust manifolds, bottom end, etc. Milage was about 72k. The car wasn't symptomatic before it happened: I finished a day of autocross, and about 2 miles from the event site, I made a hard left turn, the car almost stalled, and then I heard a very loud ticking noise. Half a mile later, the CAS was ground to a pulp, and the car was a no-start. Crank endplay is visually noticable at this point, and I haven't had the heart to tear the engine apart yet. :p

On the other hand, there's a local fellow with a FWD '97 that's never walked, running low 11's. He almost hit 10's, but his stock bottom end didn't like nitrous very much...;)
