Is crankwalk blowin out of proportion

i think it is. ive seen people post questions on why there car is running funny and a lot of the times "crankwalk" is asked if thats the proper diagnosis.

im a former crankwalk victim but i knew that could happen when i purchased my car. i remember when cucumber car got messed up by his brother(not CW related) but someone mentioned something about DSMers...they always come back and make their engines stronger.

anyways theres a poll goin on at DSMTALK seein how many 7-bolt 4gs have walked. as of right now there are 57 that have not walked and 17 that have...so thats about 1 in 4 cars accordin to that poll. its a sticky in the lounge area of the forum if anyone wants to add their car.

EDIT: oh yea, outta those cars that did walk...most of them were 97s, mine was one of them:mad:

CW is NOT Blow out of Proportion. It real and it can happen to any engine but It just happen much more to DSM's. It's not the end of the world and it can happen on 6-bolts too, but it's very rare. It's a huge defect in the 2G blocks that cause the sloppy engineering. And If you watch you will see mitsubishi try to cover it and trying a fix it, but very sloppy. Then give up and then go with the 3G's
1995 The big start of CW
1996-97 The biggest CW year
1998-99 Floating thrust bearings
2000- up new engine. But they also make only on revised 7-bolt that covers 1995-99.

1992.5-1994 7-bolt that have very few numbers
1995 much more then others
1996-1997 the most
1998-99 about the same as 1992.5-1994

This is what I have learned over the years of researching CW.

seems like I need to get my hands on the 91 GST engine I have around here....might get valuable in time :)Since I have the 97GST Spyder I might be in for a CW someday and it can be good to have a engine to swap with hten*S*

I still would like ty see how many DSMs of all sold that got CW...
From say 100.000cars, X got CW..only then you know what the porportions are...

Yes, it would be great to get those numbers. There was talk, some time back, about a class action suit and someone did do some research only to conclude it wasn't likely to succeed (http://www.roadraceengineering.com/walkingcrankshaft.htm). Still, a subpoena for the vehicle service records and internal engineering analyses from Mitsubishi might reveal some interesting facts. It seems like they knew something was up because they redesigned the bearing.

This has to be the most nettling aspect of the phenomenon. I've read a few sites about guesses regarding what causes it, but I've not seen anyone mention the fact that the crank is running transversely, and that during all cornering, the thrust bearing has to deal with the crank's (and to a point, the connecting rod's) weight as it is subjected to lateral loads. I don't know if that has any more or less effect than heavy clutches, oil robbed by piston squirters, or any of the other suspected contributing causes. And is there any other car that has such a known incidence of occurance?

give me a break, you think the lateral acceleration load compares to force exerted by the clutch on the thrust bearing? maybe a corning load might generate 200 lbs of force if that, but guess how much force an ACT 2600 puts on the thrust bearing............you guessed it 2600 lbs.

these are reasons you shouldn't sit at stoplights holding the clutch in for 5 minutes and should also disconnect the clutch start switch.

I heard that the more miles u have on the engine the less u have to worry about. i heard after 60,000 miles the chances of getting it get slim. But then again like some say it can strike at any time, but thats what i heard

That a Lie. It can happen at any milage.

I also agree wth the clutch theory that chrisAWD said. But what I think is the gurtal the 7-bolt has kills it. If you see the 6-bolt it doesn't have a gurtal and is alow to flex more to alow individual bearings to shift at a different angles keeping the bearing surface flush, instead of one big shift at a bad angle and uneven bearing. That IMO kills the 7 bolts.
