Is a pocketlogger good enough?

Thinking about picking up a pocket logger for now so I can get some tuning done on my 97 gsx. My mods are on my profile. Dont have much money right now for a dsmlink and a eprom. So ill get them one day. So good idea for now?

+1 ^^

Can any obd logger cable work? I know to flash evo ecu's you need that special cable, but what about just to log your 2g ecu.

The tricky thing on a 2g is that the logger cable alone costs $90+. I don't know about compatibility. The pocketlogger you buy will be "locked" to the cable and your name...somehow, the cable has something in it that makes it different from customer to customer. This difference might make a pocketlogger cable not work with other loggers and might make other logger cables not work with pocketlogger. This might also be true for other logger vendors (cable or software).

It is possible to calculate knock on a 2g from airflow, rpm, and timing advance logs. You need the stock timing map, some math skills, and patience, though. Basically, you calculate what the timing *should* be on the load vs. rpm timing map by calculating load (depends on airflow and rpm) and using the logged rpm. Then you compare the logged timing to the timing advance on the map. If there is a difference, you're knocking. There is also a formula for converting timing retard and knock count (I forget it), so with all of that, it is *technically* possible to "log" knock count on a 2g with pocketlogger or similar. There are complicating factors, though...if your intake air temps are too high or your coolant temps are too high or too low, the ECU pulls timing. If you know these rules for pulling timing for other reasons than knock, you can still compute knock count, but as you've probably realized, it's not entirely straight-foreward. Anyway, it's certainly possible...I do it occasionally (I have mysterious knock even at 9psi boost that I've never figured out) and am disappointed each time, because I see that I still see knock.

If you want to find out more about evoscan, there's a thread that's been active for many months about it. I haven't followed it in a while, but I think that it can log knock on '97 2gs, but it can do even more on '98-'99 cars (different protocol for communicating ECU info to the OBDII port in the newer 2gs). Anyway, I already own pocketlogger so I have to deal with it, but it looks like evoscan might be better if you haven't purchased your logger yet.

How about:
Cheap PDA + Generic OBD Cable from ebay + EvoScan = A damn good 2g logger.

(for my 99) That cable has some euro specs to it, however there are other cables like it on ebay.

My question is:Will a generic cable like that work with evoscan. I am going to bite the bullet and just try that setup and report back. On another note... I have used my friends obd gauge and then tried to find a 2g timing map. I couldn't find a timing map. If I could I would just write a program that would do the calculations for you after you inputted the values.

There is an Excel spreadsheet with the 2g timing and fuel maps on it floating around this forum...I'll look for it and post if I find it.

I wrote a program like that. I asked swarm and Ludachris about adding a "tools" section to this site so that folks could paste a log into it and it would spit out a corresponding column of knock sum...or a different tool that could accept compressor map data, airflow numbers, and PR and dump out efficiencies, theoretical output temps, etc. They sounded excited, but someone dropped the ball.

I'll go look for that thread with the spreadsheet in it...

EDIT: Check out the thread below. Post #11 has the excel spreadsheet (you have to rename the file...it has a .pdf tacked onto the end due to some forum filetype uploading rule at the time).

This is another thread I was interested and I have been removed why is this happening?

I have no idea what you're trying to say. I can take three guesses by adding punctuation in different places and maybe a missing word here and there:

"This is another thread. I was interested (in it) and I have been removed (from my great uncle's will?). Why is this happening?" In this case, I have no idea what you're trying to say.

"This is another thread I was interested (in), and I have been removed (from something (?) related to this interesting thread). Why is this happening?" In this case, I have no idea what you're trying to say.

"This is another thread I was interested (in), but I have been removed (from something that I forgot to describe). Why is this happening?" In this case, I still have no idea what you're trying to say.

You've got my curiosity now. Could you rephrase your post so that I can understand it and perhaps help you? I don't think I can guess at it.

Yes, I'm being a smartass, and No, I still don't know what you're talking about. But I do want to help.:)
