i have a 96 tsi awd, my cars tranny was a little goofy since i bought it once in a while it would pop out of fifth on the highway. then about a week ago it was hard to get it out of reverse not to hard going in but getting it out provided just a little more effort then i thought nesscary. but anyways i get into my car this morning and it will not go into reverse at all. theres no grinding no whining no evil noises LOL but the car just will not go into reverse when its running or whens it not. on a side note when the cars off it will not go into fifth either but when the car is running and moving it will go into fifthjust fine with no grinding at all. im thinking its just cables or bushings or something but i wanted to see what all the guru's on here thought
help me out guys please

First of all, Go get your choice of tranny fluid via research on this site and a 36mm socket and after draining your tranny fluid take off the case off end of the tranny. Then use a flathead screwdriver and remove the dented washer holding the 2 nuts in place. After that, take that 36mm socket and a torque wrench and torque the two nuts to 108-110 foot lbs. Use some RTV and replace the cover.
Heres a step by step:

Next to fix the Reverse problem, You need to adjust your shifter linkage.
Go here to do so:

thnx alot the quick reply will let me sleep tonite LOL. my only other question is this: i thought the was no way to adjust the shifter cables on second gens

i have a 2g tsi awd my car will not go into reverse or fifth when the car is off. if the car is moving it will go into fifth like butter but when its off it dosent shift reverse or fifth, and even when its runnig it will not shift into reverse at all. as far as i can tell there is no adjustment for the shifter i cant see it being a bent fork because a. it shifts into fifth and b. the car just had a trans rebuilt and bushur put steel forks in it about 20000 miles ago. so im stumped and lost and i def need a little help LOL
p.s. i know i just posted on this topic but i didnt get the answers i needed and i dont have 900 bucks to shell out right now for a trans rebuild

If you've posted this elsewhere then you probably already have the answer it just isn't one you like. If you don't have the money to pay someone else do the work yourself. It isn't rocket science, just hard work.

This might be your problem but I can't say without being there.

Here are some instructions on rebuilding your own transaxle.

Oh, and please put more than "Help me" in the thread title. You're a full member, you know better than that. :nono:

sorry yea i know i shoulda had a better title and i would do the work myself but i have a sti sitting in peices in my garage right now LOL. to many projects and not enough time before the season starts

Try removing the cables from the transmission and trying to get the tranny into reverse by hand. That should help isolate if it's the tranny or the cables causing the problem with reverse.
