i was taking the air cleaner out to wash it when removing housing the clamps that secure the filter in snapped off now my filter wont stay in place. do i need a whole new intake setup?

just get some more clamps or put the old ones back on. They usually fall off when you unsnap them. pretty ease to reinstall them. Hope you'e not talking about the bracket on the canister itself. If so, you can have those brazed back on.

it was the bracket that broke and only one left now the housing is useless. is there another way to secure the air filter in place

You could try pop riviting the bracket back on. Probably best bet would just hit the salvage yard for another canister. Duct tape will work for a temp fix.

is there a way to not use the canister without putting in a whole new intake altogether

About the only thing I can think of is to replace the base. You'll have to remove your MAF and put it in the new base, but thats only about 8 screws. Until you can get another base plate, just tape it together. The bolts on the canister will hold it in place and the clamp on the hose will provide enough tension to keep the 2 pieces from coming apart. At least for a little while. Heat will loosen the tape up but shouldn't cause any big problems.

20 years with my Laser, never had that problem.

well the screws werent on the housing when i bought the car...(its a real project car) so taping it together is my only option until i can find a new one or get a cold air intake in the future or buy 2 small C clamps to hold it down if possible

You could just check with the locals and see if one of them has a MAF unit. Usually they don't take them apart but all you need is the base plate. Dark right now but I'll check in the morning and see if there's anything else you can do. Trying to do every thing from memory on how it goes together. Couple c-clamps might work if they don't vibrate loose and fall off. May be able to run some sheet metal screws in, just can't remember if there's a lip on the base plate or not. I know there's one on the canister.

Where did you buy that car if it's so rusty on the air cleaner that the tabs broke off.

ill have to think about it also but i got it as a back and forth to work car for 1800 needs paint and body work the motor is solid just see alot of potential in the car so im just improving as it breaks but i just might buy a new intake and be done with the old one but thats not for another 2 weeks
