im sure its been asked before but do i need a turbo timer?

i had one on my old tsi awd. im getting a 92 tsi awd tmrw and its running synthetic oil. do i still need a turbo timer or can i just shut off the car. lets hear opinions

you simply need to let the car run a little bit after driving before shutting it off

turbo timer just allows you to get out of your car and walk away while it runs on its own to cool down alittle

imo it should be one of the first mods you get for your turbo car. as stated, it lets the turbo cool down a little before shut-off. if you just poke around town, no big deal (but then, why did you buy a turbo?). if you drive the car hard, get one.

i wont argue that its a good idea to have one. hell i have one on my mostly stock 2g tsi, as well as my 93 tsi awd.

however i will say that no one DEFINITLY needs one, no matter how hard they run their car. there is no difference between a turbo timer letting your car cool down and you sitting there for a little bit to let it cool off.

sure its nice to get out of the car as soon as you get somewhere and not have to worry about it, but its not something you HAVE to have.

I find that people always let the cars idle for way to long. I let it sit for 30 secs max. I mean honestly how often are you driving around on full boost and then bam shut your car off?

My oppinion, no you do not need a turbo timer. No one needs a turbo timer. It is just for convenience. The turbo timer's purpose is just to allow the car to run to allow enough time for the oil and water to run through the turbo to cool it so that it does not cook the oil inside the turbo after the car is shut off.

You can perform this same function by just waiting about a minute or so (depending on how hard you have driven the car) for the car to cool down and then turn it off.

My man, you have got a lot to learn.. but... you came to the right place.

1. a turbo timer lets the turbocharger cool down some before the engine is shut off but allows you to take your keys out during this run time, so that the oil doesnt "cook" inside the turbo lines and clog up the oil lines going to your turbocharger.

2. It should have buttons on it to set either an amount of time to let the car turbo-time or have an automatic mode, where it calculates the cool down time based on how hard the car was ran.

3. Turbochargers themselves arent oiled, well at least not by you, there are lines going to it that feeds off the engines oil supply, just keep good oil in your car, and youll have good oil going to your turbo.

This is what it comes down to... Turbo Timer = Aprox $150 bucks give or take... compared to 30 seconds of your time to let the car idle after you've driven it hard. What's it worth to you? Here's a little simple math. I make $15 dollars an hour. I'd have to work ten hours (not including what uncle sam takes) to buy that timer. There are 120 half-minute intervals in an hour. Basically, that means it would take 1200 times of letting my car idle to get my money's worth. If I was young and only made $7.50 like alot of younger people do... it would take 2400 times.

Ha, I was still thinking about this subject. Some more math... if I drove my car TWICE daily EVERY day of the year, and only made $7.50 an hour, it would take 3 1/2 years to get my money's worth out of that piece of nothing they call a turbo timer.

yea, but its funny to go to the mall set your timer for 30 secs and walk away. watch peoples faces as you do this. Suprising how many nce people will tell you, "Hey you forgot to turn off your car!" Hopefully you were counting under your breath so you can turn around and say "CAR! Shut off!" and it does... Wonderfully technologically advanced cars these DSM's are huh?

Do you think convenience stores stay open becuase they have the cheapest products or the best varieties? NO, its the price you pay for the convenience of getting something quickly and easily.

Turbo timers are much the same.. if im running late for work, and my job may be on the line, or late for a date with a cute girl i want to leave a good impression on, it may be worth more to me to not have to sit in the car than the amount of money i would have made in that 30 seconds working at my job.

Things arent as easily figured as you make them sound, i think a turbo timer is a good investment, especially for someone who is on the run a lot. As a daily driver i probably turn my car off way more than 2 times a day anyhow, more like 5 times a day.

While it isn't a big deal with watercooled turbo's, you definately should have a turbo timer with any non-watercooled turbo to prevent oil coking problems. Why sit in your car waiting for it to idle out on a hot day when a simple turbo timer can do it for you.

You don't need to sit in your car for thirty seconds EVERY time you use it!! Anytime you are driving part throttle you are cooling the turbo with oil and water. That's exactly what a turbo timer does.

Think about it - do you come blasting down your street at full boost, pull in your driveway, and instantly shut the car off??? Then you don't need one. Do you roll up to work screaming at 21 psi through the parking lot, pull right in a spot and then shut the car off??? Then you don't need one. As long as you have some time after the turbo has been producing heat to circulate water and oil, you don't need a TT.

Even at the dragstrip, after a low 13 second run, I have PLENTY of time after the finish line, turning off the track, the ride to pick up a timeslip, and the cruise back to the pits, for my 14B to cool back to normal temp.

Very good points. Here is another one. Most people just say they will stay in the car while they let it cool down. After about 15 seconds everyone I have even seen do that just gets ups and walk away, because they are impatient. I used to think that I let my car cool for a decent time, but then when I had a TT I noticed that it wasn't long at all.

Is it necessary? No, but neither is a fast car, but that is why we are here, to go fast. With going fast comes extra maintenance and care for your car and its parts.
