Idle problems...HELP!!!

First of all do a boost leak test easy to do and cheap, mine solved lots of problems since i added my fmic.

I figured the boost leak would only be noticed under throttle and not at idle. I was planning on a Boost Leak test when I got it running as it should. Would a boost leak affect the idle?

The alternator may have something to do with it since as soon as those fans kick on the idle drops. I haven't tried anyting else like lights ect. I'll be taking a closer look this weeked and I'll see what it does and report back if anything changes.

Boost leaks at any time are bad, yes it will affect the idle if you have a leak idle could be a issue for you, altenator and idle never heard of that my idle isses were because of a bad isc, and lots of vacuum leaks. Do the blt anytime running or not, it will help you solve some issues its so easy and cheap to do, i use my frequently.

Most boost leaks are vacuum leaks too when your at idle and could def cause idle issues. I had a blown intake manifold gasket and it made the car idle very rough.

is there a easy/good way to check for vacum leaks? What I did before was just look at the hoses and push and pull on them with the car running to see if I noticed any changes. Also, I pulled them off to see if they had vacum and from what I could tell everything seemed fine. It doesn't seem like an exact method for finding a vacum leak or should I be doing this a little differently?

Ok, I youtubed it and found the carb cleaner method of spraying suspected areas and looking for changes in the idle. That seems a lot better than my method so I'll give that a try and update later.

A boost leak test will reveal vacuum leaks too cause most vacuum lines are under pressure while your in boost.

Ok, I went out to Home Depot and spent $6 on pvc cap and a 2" coupler. Then I went by Walmart and bought the valve stem which came in a set of 2 for $2.50. It took about 10 mins to put together. I did the test and found one major screw up by me of course. It took me a while to find it bc it wouldn't hold pressure at all but eventually I was able to locate it. I had the TB gasket turned the wrong way, 180 deg. off so there was a major leak where the TB bolts to the intake:ohdamn:. I pulled that off and put gasket sealant on both surfaces, got it in correctly and bolted it back together. Did the test again and much better results. The other leak I could find for now anyway was one of the injectors. I pulled the injector rail and pulled the injectors out. The O rings were stuck to the inside of the rail and were deteriorated pretty badly. So now I need the Orings which I should be able to get at the Auto parts store. Oh, the BISS was leaking also so need that O ring as well. Everything else seemed good. I'll test again and see what else comes up when I get it back together later next week.

I want to get the injectors cleaned and tested while I have them out to be sure that wont be a problem down the road. Better to do it now while its out. Is the only thing I will need going to be the O rings or should I replace anything else related to the injectors before putting them back in?

You guys kick ass and were right about the boost leak test. I was under the impression that was for actual boost problems and not idle problems. You guys were 100% on the money with that boost test!!! :thumb:

Well another step forward. I probably wont do anything with it until I find someone to clean and test the injectors before putting it back together. I'm wondering if I should looking into going with bigger injectors since I plan on doing that down the road or just wait until I'm really ready to start modding it?

Anything besides the O-rings that I should be replacing?

Get yourself a set of lower insulators for where the injectors go into the head. They deteriorate over time and cause boost/vacuum leaks so you might as well do them to while the injectors are out.

OK, update to this project.

I got my injectors cleaned and back. The shop that cleaned them said they weren't too bad. I had to find the lower seals and found a dealership that had 4 for $12 which I thought was a good price (for a dealer anyway). I got the injectors in today and re-tested for leaks. Found one of the injector seals leaking so pulled them back out and put a light coat gasket sealant on it and put it back in and no leak. Then back on to the next leak which was a vacum hose going into the intake (pcv) so I cut that and stuck it back on. Next was another small vacum hose going into the coolant filler sensor. I got that also taken care of. Re-tested and the BISS was leaking big time so ran to Home Depot and got a pack of #5 O-Rings which fit like a glove. I figured that was it since I didn't find anymore. Well still had the high idle so resorted to spraying with throttle body cleaner around the blow off valve had a leak so pulled that off and added some sealant to the gasket and tested again. Now seems like the OEM hoses going down to the intercooler seems to be the next leak. When I spray that the idle drops way down. I'm going to pressurize the system again and test tomorrow so see exactly where the leak is since I really cant tell exactly with the TB cleaner. By the way my idle is very steady now just that it's still high at about 1400 rpm. That what got me to search a little more. I figured it was either a missed leak or my FIAV not working.

Anyone know where I can get replacement intercooler hoses (OEM type). At this time I don't want to upgrade to a FMIC since I'm just trying to get it running good and save my money for body and paint then worry about the fun stuff.

Hopefully this will be the last leak...I'm seeing progress and getting closer so that a good thing :thumb:

I have been searching for any other leaks but haven't been able to find anything. On the BLT is I put 20psi of air in it will empty to about 10psi in about 12 seconds and to about 0 by 20 seconds. I don't hear any leaks though so I'm having a hard time tracking it down.

I do have a manafold crack and I'm wondering if that crack could be causing my high idle??

Could that be the problem or still keep looking? I'm running out of ideas.
