Hey guys this is kind of related to my other post which is in the wrong forum.
THe leakdown test says my rings are shot so it's time for a rebuild.

My question is will it cost me more to rebuild my cars engine my self or to just get another motor out of a junk yard?

Can someone link me to a complete rebuild kit?

Thanks

hmm, so the leak down test said you're rings were bad huh...

The rebuild depends on what your goals are of course. For just a stock rebuild, you can't beat the prices, shipping, and customer service of the parts dinosaur.

Others have rebuild kits if you're ever planning on boosting:

Thanks.
This is just what i'm looking for.

Wow stock is crazy cheap compared to performance.

Quick question.
Can you run 12.5:1 compression on pump gas?

Look like for a complete performance rebuild top and bottom is going to be about 2500 3 grand. hmmm better save my pennies.

Nope. I know of 12.5:1 CR all motor 2GNTs that knock at idle on 104octane.

If you really wanted to get the most bang for the buck, shop around and see if you can't find a running condition engine at a local yard that you could swap into your car to get you by while you rebuild the orginal engine.

Thats what i think i'm going to do.
Pick up another running 420A out of a local yard then build this motor.

I know everyone think turbo is the way to do but i really want to build this motor into a spunky N/A car. nothing killer fast just quick andfun to drive.
i'm guessing i can get away with running the 10.1CR with 92 fuel right?

I think that is going to be close to OK. Right now I am running approx 10.9 and I am getting a little knock/ping at idle on 93.5. I've got crower 2's in so I would suspect that with stockers I would be OK. I still haven't put on my S-AFC so I think that it would be able to solve to my idle knock. There are others on here who are using some sort of fuel management. I am using the AF/X ECU.

I guess what I am saying is a lot will be dependant on what the rest of your mods will be.

Please feel free to stick with NA. The arguement of spending all that money for a rebuild vs just buying a turbo kit doesn't really wash. When you have spent your money on the engine, you will then have a new rebuilt engine, whereas, if you spent that money on a turbo kit you would still not have an engine :sneaky: . And I am currently beating the stocker turbos with my NA.

I get a little knock at 10.5:1CR when it's 100*+ outside and I have the AC on, running 91 (the highest we get here in AZ). I'd consider reverting back to stock if she weren't so much damn fun to drive at this level. I am currently considering a custom LTH, ITBs and C3s, but I'm also considering going in a different direction with the car this winter (not turbo, not nitrous and no, it's not supercharged, either), so I dunno where I'll be with this engine at the end of this year.

Before pulling the engine, try using some seafoam and see if compression and leakdown get better. The reason I say this is because I have pulled a few 420a's apart with low compression and poor leakdown results only to find that the second compression ring and oil rings are stuck in the pistons from carbon buildup. I have suggested the same thing to a few other gs/rs owners since I started finding these problems and sure enough, It help tremendously. Then, you can get a boneyard motor and start the build on it. It will only cost a few dollars and save some labor of the swap but will not change your overall plans at all.

That could be a great idea. After all, what do you have to lose, right? Pop for some Seafoam and run it through the right way (search). You might be pleasantly surprised!

Wow thats a great idea i'm going to give that a try and see what happens.
maybe ill get lucky.
Thanks guys for all the help it would have taken me so long to get this far on my own.

Okay I've started the parts ordering.
I got new valve seals so i can do those at the same time as the pistons. also got a new timing belt.

Now my question is I picked up a turbo off ebay today.

I want to boost 8PSI no more i want this car for a daily driver not a street racer. Just wanted it to be a bit more spunky.

My question is can i get stock pistons and rings and put those back into my motor or because i'm boosting do i need to go with new rods and low comp pistons?

Like i said before i wont be boosting over 8PSI thats what the wastegate on this turbo is setup at.
It will also be Intercooled.

if 8psi is your goal, then stock compression and stock parts should be good to go.

If you some cash laying around I would consider throwing in at least forged pistions, because that is the weakest point.

good luck though.

I think i know the answer to this but i'll ask.
Once i finish the engine rebuild should i break it in then turbo it or just turbo the fresh motor?

You can turbo it...just would be in best interest if you left the wastegate disconnected :thumb:

its cheaper to really get it from the junkyard. thats what i did with my 92 eclipse. but instead i bought the engine from pull and save in PA(look it up online) and got a turbo engine. then went to a engine place and had them refinish and polish it. worked like heaven, till i needed a turbo. all the cost's together was 800 bucks

damn senior drivers wreaking my dreams:beatentodeath:
