I'm new to the Tuner, so this is restricting- oh well, my question. I just bought a 95' Talon TSI AWD, It has a BIG 16G turbo, 3"turbo back, 2"upr/lwr intercooler pipes, 2.5"-3" intake with K&N, HKS turbo timer ( used everytime).- i dont know if my mods would affect the problem so i thought i'd list them.
I was driving on the highway ( speed limit- 65~) and it all of a sudden started to overheat out of nowhere, i pulled over to let it cool, i popped the hood and the rad. overflow bottle fluid was boiling, so i sat there for an hour, i just turned around and went home, it started fine again, then it did it again, now it was losing power and couldn't keep itself going, i had to stop for traffic and it died.
I pushed into the neighborhood right there. I came back the next day and drove it home- ( it took 20min. to start it), it was boiling and smoking ( i believe that it was steam from the RAD. bottle. well. I comp. tested it and it was ( from left to right)
- 2/ 0/ 0/ 60 - the car will not start for anything, it still turns over though.

- Im at a complete loss to what or why it all happened?- can you guys give my some requests to the problem. :notgood:

thank you for any of your suggestions! :talon:

0 compression means bent valves, 100% of the time. :notgood:
Probably blew the HG, which caused the overheating, then by trying to start it repeatedly you either jumped timing or the excessive overheating actually cracked the head.

Is your T-Belt intact? What, if anything, did the car "do" before it farked up like this? Running fine, then just happened out of nowhere?

How much boost were you running on the stock injectors and a big 16g. Again it sounds like you cracked the head. A blown headgasket would usually yield some numbers. Check your timing and then take your head off to figure out what is wrong.

Usually, with an over heating condition where the coolant boils, you stand a good chance of blowing the head gasket. This is likely the cause for your issues with compression and the fact that the car doesn't want to start. If this were mine, I would first replace everything in the cooling system (hoses, thermostat, coolant temp sensor) and pull the radiator to make sure that it will actually pass coolant through it and do what it's supposed to do. Another likely culprit is the water pump and if it hasn't been replaced, I would do so along with the timing belt and tensioners as well as the balance shaft belt.

As far as damage to the head, this is also a possibility and while you'll need to remove it for the head gasket replacement, it would also be a good idea to make sure that is hasn't warped from the excess heat. Take it to a machine shop and have it checked to ensure straightness. While the head is off, also check the valves and see that they aren't bent as bent valves will also cause a loss of compression. While this is a common occurence from timing belt damage, I would go after every possibility in getting this squared away.

Hope that helps,

Andy

Was it sitting for a long time before you bought it? My car had been sitting for almost 2 years, and when I finally got it running again, the water pump had died.

the timing belt and water pump and pulleys and belts were all replaced, the car was not sitting, though, the guy said that the thermostat was going.

several others, have also told me that the piston rings may have melted?- could that have happened????

the timing belt is there, all intact, all other belts are there, stock boost, as i was getting ready to buy a boost controller, ( good thing i didnt), other than that im at a total loss

For anything to melt, it had to be overheated for a bit. Simple thing like a new radiator cap could of fixed your over heating problem. If your car over heated while you were driving, that means your radiator wasn't cooling the coolant. I would flush that out and do the coolant system maintainence. Check if your radiator fans work as well.

I don't know about the pistons rings, but you had better not drive that car until you fix the problem :notgood: . Try changing the thermostat, sometimes little stuff like that can really mess up your car. Mine had a bad thermostat and it really made my car idle crazy.
Good Luck
Will

the other thing is to make sure your fans are working! it sounds to me just what ultimate said the head gasket! but what caused it? thats what you need to fix first

same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. my temp gauge as normal and the overflow bottle was full and boiling. in the ol cars you know if it is the head gasket by milky looking oil and most people do not realize that you cannot go by that anymore.

try this. take off your radiator cap and let the car idle, if it starts bubbling and over flowing from there you need a new head gasket. also you can first try leaving the car on and idle, and ocasionally squeeze the upper rad. pipe. if it is rock hard then that is another sign.

just because i went thru it recently it does sound like new head gasket :(

first, I miss typed, - the piston rings blew, not melted, to my knowledge. - also, the timing belt and all belts are intact, the comp. is what it is, Im positive its at least a headgasket.
You keep telling me to let it idle, - the car wont start what so ever!!! :notgood:
- the radiatior cap seal was a little loose, and the thermostat was crap when i changed.- every thing that i say that i changed!, was after it turned to crap. Also - i was skimming over the head looking for oil or clean spots and i realized that my FPR hose was not connected, ( 2 inches away from the connection),
I also would like to know if there is a way to see if it is a H.G. or if its piston rings or both. As well as that and the bent valves,- Im really stressed on cash, i do not want to break something myself, but i cant fork out to much to remove my head and find out that the valves punctured and bent, or if the rings are crap.

does the motor crank or does it soumd like a drill? you can drain the oil out to see if there is coolant in it. and take the spark plugs out and see what they look like. if there is signs of coolant then your head gasket is shot. if the motor free spins (sounds like a drill or electric motor) as you crank then the valves are bent! its not that hard to rip the head off. should be able to do it in afew hours. if you were close to me i'd do it for you for pizza and beer!

the motor turns over, thats how i got the comp. test, ( almost wants to start)- thats also why i know its not hydro lock either. the head gasket is shot, i still need to know if the piston rings are crap or not.- i live in Aurora CO, so if anyone can help, please do...
