Hey guys,
yea my enghine from howell should be done in a week. i have no place to do this but my driveway sounds good for now. Does anybody know what special tools i need for this swap, i have about all the general tools. Also, how long should i expect this to realistically take. Im thinkin 2-3 days. MOST IMPORTANTLY, anyone who has done this what problems should i expect to run into? tips? strategy? Thanks for the help. :thumb:

What are you doing? 420a to 4G63? Realistically... we can't tell you anything. We don't know how good a mechanic you are, what tools you have, or what your doing.

well, here are the basics of pulling engines.

1. LABEL EVERYTHING! If you don't know what it is, put a number on it. Wiring is a pain when you don't know where each harness goes.

2. Make sure you have all the tools your going to need. A Cherry Picker or a hoist.

3. Get a multi drawer bin and label all the bolts. Exmp. All the trans bolts in one drawer labeled Trans Bolts.

To get the motor out unbolt the Axle nut. Use the brakes to do this, it should be on there pretty good. Then unbolt the sturts and remove them, then the upper ball joint, along with the tie rods. This will let you be able to pull the Drive Shafts.

Next your going to want to pull the lower crossmember. The rear motor mount is on this. It would be a good idea to hook your chain to your motor now. Unbolt the driver side motor mount attached to the trans now also.

Pull the trans off by removing the bolts surrounding the bell housing. After all the bolts are removed, use a screwdriver to pry the trans from the block. It should come apart fairly easy. Then slide the trans out of the motor and gently drop it out the bottom.

You should have all your Vacume lines and harnesses taken off and labeled already. Undo your remaining motor mount. (passanger side mount)

The motor should now be able to pull out the top of the car.

Thats about it. It sounds easy, and it is. Just takes time and brains. Make sure you got both before starting.

i had pulled my engine out the top without having to pull the tranny. I just pulle the radiator(just in case), unbolted the AC compressor, unbolted the passenger motor mount, unplugged the wiring harness, unbolt the flywheel from the torque converter through the inspection cover and then pulled. No problems with it at all. this was out of my 420a.
