I have searched and want to verify, timing issues....

I was wondering I saw the vfaw, the page in the service manual, and various other places about how the timing marks look to line up for tdc. Upon searching I have founs that the are suppose to be 6 o clock on the intake and 12 on the exhaust, is this correct? My issue s that when set across from each other my car wont start, I have just got done rebuilding my motor and double checked everything after it wouldnt start so the only thing I can see is that the timing is suppose to be set to 6 and 12, please let me know so I can redo timing tomorrow if I need to.

Oh, and also should the dowel be right behind the timing mark or the cam gears or is it off from it? I ask because I dont have a yolk to hold the cam gear to take the bolt out.

you do not time the engine by the dowel.

With the VC off the motor, rotate the cams. you can see a hole in a rough area of the cam between cyl 1 and 2.

Rotate the crank to TDC cyl 1 which is the mark on the crank. Now rotate the cams so the holes are pointing straight perpendicular to the VC gasket surface. The MArks on the cam gears should be facing each other like the diagram in the book shows.
