as most everyone on here knows maintenance on DSMs can make or break your car. When i first got mine i made the mistake of putting off maintenance and sure enough i had problems. Since then ive always kept up and never had a major problem that i couldnt fix easily.

Bottom line is DSMs have a bad rap on reliability but if u take care of your car itll be fine. DSMs are cars that require attention and thats why we love em.

Okay, cool. I love my mitsubishi, I just dont want it to be pooping out on me. I used to have a 2000 dodge neon and once that hit 100k miles it went downhill. So I decided to get my new mitsubishi.

You should be fine, there are no major problems really with a dsm.. if you think about it no notorious electrical problems really.. I'm a mechanic and i drive my car fairly hard , opening up the throttle from time .. i gotta say its a hell of a reliable car.. what hurts these cars is they are known for engine crank walk.. which is on a selected few and not your motor anyways so don't worry. i hate dumb kids coming up to me saying " hey man ## car look nice, but dont talons have bad engines? why didn't you get an eclipse they r faster " .. i feel like takin a hammer to their knees...

Thats good, because I love my car even though it has minor work that needs to be done. Nothing major. hahaROFL some kids are too immature. If it gets me from point a to point b im fine with it.

No turbo doesn't mean no stress. Keep up the regular shop visits and you'll never have anything that's worth worrying about.

Only major problems I've had was clutch master cylinder leaking, flywheel bolts breaking, and rattling pulley. No crankwalk yet *knock on wood*. Maintaining the car and driving nice mostly helps a lot.

Hey,

I'm thinking about the Eagle Talon TSI AWD, I want a good relaible car for winter and summer, I'm just trying to get some information on the Eagle Talons, and anything sounds sketchy what kind of car should I get and know if they are going to run strong even with bolt on mods, my friend has a talon with 350 HP AWD It's a awesome car he likes it a lot but I never talked to him about if it was reliably at all so I'm really wonder if these cars run strong and long if kept up on all the oil running good 93 octane and tune ups.
I've seen a lot of 95-98 Talons going for about 3-5 Grand and some that are over 10 G
I'm wondering what's a good price range for these cars I'm lookin for a 2nd gen

-Thanks guys

My car is great in the snow. I get around better in it than most people do in their 4x4s. The problems that I've had with my car all stem from it having 209,xxx miles on it.

If you buy one, make sure you do some basic preventative maintenance on it, since most people don't keep up on those things.

These cars can be reliable as long as you don't beat on them or upgrade without supporting mods.

I bought my car for $4500. I should have talked him down a bit, but mine came loaded with every option, so it's nice for cruising along with laying down some rubber.

Do a search on here and you'll find many forums on people looking at buying DSMs. Those will tell you what to look out for.

yeah, what do you mean by beat? you can obvious floor these car's and run them through the gears right? Obviously don't Rice rev it holding it to the floor, take it easy at times, and open it up at others is fine right? Yes I found the maintence thread I will keep up with everything listed on the car but I was wondering what Spark Plug do you guys run? and what ratio on the oil, do you guys daily drive these cars?

DSM's require a lot of tender care if you're going to beat on them. They have gained the reputation of being unreliable cars by people who do not take care of the systems and perform the regular maintenance.

Taking this into consideration, the pricing varies dramatically between vehicles and it would take an expert to adequately appraise the the value based on service records, modifications, number of owners, etc... If you don't have any experience buying cars, try to bribe a friend who does to come along with you on any excursions. The pricing will highly depend on where you live, as well.

An example of some considerations prior to buying my eclipse: '94 GSX at just under 200k miles for $2k, original family of owners, a Yoga instructor, complete list of regular maintenance intervals, clutch only needed to be replaced once, no other major repairs, and the original purchase documents in the glove box. I took all of these into consideration before buying the vehicle and considered it a good buy.

History of vehicle complete and verifiable; owner personalities (likely driving style); clutch wear indicates heavy launches; major repairs may be related to reckless driving; all things to consider.

so if i follow up on the reg maintenance on that thread the car should run fine daily?

They can be very reliable. Just some people want to upgrade mods and forget maintance. Thats what I would start with it you buy it and it is what you want. I can't say enough maintance.

Any car will run fine when its taken care of. DSM's are very popular for looking good and going fast which is why most people probably consider them unreliable. There are VERY few people on dsmtuners or that own a DSM period that are Completely stock. They will last a long time when taken care of and will do just fine as a daily driver (assuming the previous owner/s did the same).

Just letting you know if you dont but the Mitsubishi Eclipse is the same as Eagle Talon except looks. Just pointing that out since you said Eagle Talon specifically.

Good luck with what you decide on doing.

I see that you're from new england, and if you get as much rain in the summer and salt on the roads in the winter as we do in PA, watch out for rust! Looking under the hood of my 95 GS-T the other day I noticed that my strut towers are starting to rust out... so much that I'm not sure if it'll pass inspection. This really isn't a DSM problem, but just a problem inherent to all cars in snow and rain.

sounds good, so just keep up on maintenance and it should just be like any other car, problems will come out but thye are just shit that goes wrong just need to overcome

yea i do understand this i road in a TSI AWD, they got some balls man, that's why I relaly want one and it beat the shit out of my brothers 99 honda prelude

My awd was beat its whole life until i bought it and started fixing the problems that where ignored or cobbled to get the past owners by. I have only been towed home twice with it, first time was for a broke serpentine belt, but that was product defect not the cars fault. Second time was the balance shaft belt took out the cps, which was under one hundreds to fix no big deal. This car has been my daily driver from school and back for the past year, and i will safely say that the one you are planning on buying is in a hell of a lot better shape then mine. P.S. mine has been running 16psi on stock turbo and stock motor for 3 or 4 years now, and yes it is a 7 bolt, and no there is not shaft play nor does the motor burn oil, so ha to all you 7bolt haters.

Same here on my FWD, but I dropped it down to 14psi for daily driving.

Maintenance maintenance maintenance is the key to keeping these cars (or any car) running. If you can do most of the work yourself you will be even better off. Once I hit 160k miles I had to keep my eyes on it weekly (as my daily).

i just think they are high maintanence cars but they are worth it.

All I want is a car I can drive any suggestions to keep a car reliable. I preformed all regular stuff like oil, antifreeze, tranny fluid, transfer case fluid, most hoses and vacuum lines..

I love my dsm but everything just keeps breaking....I don't know what to do i've have my talon for 5 months and ive only driven it for about 3 weeks and its my only car..

Rear, now center diff is fused together because of bad rear, turbo, carrier bearings, front axles are making noise my rear tire leans in bad the wheels make a clicking sounds, rotors are warped, strip oil feed line, injector seals that all i can think of for now.
