how much shaft play is too much?

i just bought a evo3 turbo.blades spin nice and smooth and no in/out shaft play,but there is a little up/down/side/side shaft play...not alot by all means but it does move.should i be alright with this?

as long as it's very minimal, you should be fine. i'm assuming it's a used turbo correct?

yup its used,got a pretty good deal.the seller said it has 10k on it.all the blades look to be perfect,and like i said it spins nice and easy.its just i can wobble the shaft around a tad bit...

All turbos are going to have shaft play when there is no oil in them.

in/out is always bad.
But as long as there is oil in the CHRA and the blades dont touch the compressor housing, you should be good to go.

I checked the shaft play on my new Big 28 from FP before installing it just to see what the play in a brand new turbo feels like and I was surprised. I could definitely feel a little play. It doesn't seem to affect the ability seal in the oil though... It's been on the car since last August and it's oil tight. The T25 I replaced had ~10k miles on it. It didn't leak and there is about the same amount of play there too. I've read somewhere here that as long as the wheel doesn't touch the housing it's probably okay. Maybe it's hard to tell by just wiggling the shaft? On the other hand if I was buying a used turbo though I'd probably use shaft play to get the price down.

thanks for the replies.i also read on rre's site as long as there is no in/out play and the blades dont touch its good to go,just as you guys said...i was worried it wasnt going to last.

side to side is normal. Even in a brand new turbo. There is no oil in the center cartridge etc.
