How many amps do I need? 115? 130?

Tried searching on Google and stuff, but all I kept bringing up was "Amps for sale!" etc.

Anyway, I have a 98' GST, 880 injectors, electronic boost gauge, an 800 W sound system (has battery in the back), AEM tru boost gauge, PAL slim line fans running all the time, and that's about all the electrical stuff. I put the stock 60 amp alternator in (not thinking) and it fried the voltage regulator almost instantly. I put a second one in and the same thing happened. Then I realized my idiocy and put in a 90 amp Galant alternator. It ran better but still kept overheating the alternator after a while. At first it was running 12.6 volts with the stock, then 13.0 with the Galant alt.

So, my question is, how many amps should I run? And where can I find a good alternator for relatively cheap? Thanks guys!

A good alternator is not going to be cheap. If you want a good one, your looking at paying at least $200.

Have you looked into getting a Saturn alternator? There is a thread on here about installing it, do a quick search to find it.

I know a good alternator is expensive, I just forked out several hundred for an new OEM Galant 90 amp, but like I said it isn't enough amps. The voltage regulator is overloading and is overheating the alternator. I know it's the case, because it has no shorts (already voltage drop tested the entire cars systems to make sure).

I checked the Saturn alternator swap already but don't know how many amps those are nor if they are enough. I'd prefer just to get one and be that is sufficient from a proven company and be done with the whole ordeal.

Also, I ask how many amps I need because a 130 amp alternator is like $399 and a 160 is $599 so, if I can get by 130 I'd like to do it.

I have the same electronics as you plus a bunch more, also with my battery in the trunk. Im still on the factory 60 amp and have a consistant 13.6 volts. I would lean towards you having a problem other than amp rating.

Hmm, makes me confused now.

I think I have a hunch, even though this car had been out of commission for 6 month for electrical issues.

The voltage regulator has been unresponsive on ALL three NEW OEM alternators, so I am guessing that the 4 prong connector is loose. There's nothing else it could be if the alternator isn't the answer.

Where can I find a NEW one of those?

Computer is fine, I've already troubleshot all possiblities of a short and made sure the computer is responsive.
