how long do you let your car warm up?

do you guys warm-up your dsm before "pushing" it hard?? especially in the morning or after a cold night???

if you do, how long do you let it idle??

Its so rediculously cold here right now! I warm mine up for at least 5-10 minutes then take it very easy until everyting comes up to temp. Whatever you do, don't cold boost the turbo. The compressor blades will heat up and expand much quicker then the housing and could make contact if your shaft play is excessive.

Being in Alaska...it's absolutely freezing. I warm my car up usually for 10 minutes before headin' out...and it's usually still cold inside..but not as bad...brrr...

just kinda wondering why we should let it warm up... i know i do mine but i thaught that was just my pesonal prefrance... cuz i now when the engine is cold and i get into it (i dont do this often this is myfirst turbo car and when i baught it i jumped in it and went like a n/a car) and get on it my boost gauge will go up to like 5 pounds and i wont feal anything and then all of a sudden its like a 50 shot of gas... what causes this?

I let mine warm up until its fully warm. Usually about 10 -15 minutes

I usually warm it up for two minutes, then I drive slowly until it's fully warmed up.

I warm up three to five miles. I've never been one to let an engine heat up at idle, all that warms up is the engine oil and (if an automatic) gearbox. Meanwhile, your differential(s) and wheel bearings are stone cold. I don't use more than half throttle, nor apply more than half load until the temp needle's well off its cold position. I guess it works okay this way, my 1G is up to 130K, my Datsun 2000's up over a quarter-million, and the 200SX Turbo made it to 170K (until a heater hose leak made me park it).
Of course, around here "cold" is 30°F....

I live in Socal. not exactly the coldest place on earth... I wanted to know if I Really need to start my car and let it sit and idle until the engine is warmed up before I drive? does it really make that much of a difference? Would it be bad for me to start it and just start driving (moderately) until it warmed up?

Let it idle for at least 2 min then drive it without boost at moderate rpm until the car is up to operating temperature. You shouldn't feel forced to do this, a true car enthusiast should insists that this is done.

Yes ths will prolong the life of your engine , internals, turbo , etc. It is too hard on the engine if the fluids arent up to the right temperature and flowing through the engine.Plus the oil needs to thin out alittle since when it is cold it gets thicker.

metals expand and contract.. its always a good idea to warm up an engine a bit and take it easy, especially with boost until its full warmed up

Modern cars are engineered to start up and drive-off. But not race-off.

Regardless of how my car is engineered, I wait for my logger to show at least 160F before going, 45seconds after driving no higher than 3k rpm, brings me up to 192F right where my baby likes it.
