How are DSMs after 100k?

I was thinking of getting an AWD and selling my FWD, but a lot of DSMs for sale in the classifieds are over 100k miles, just wondering -- how good are the engines after that?

The engines can last forever, if properly maintained. You have to check out basic things such as oil leaks, timing, etc... Of course your gonna have things go after that sort of mileage, but its gonna happen on any car. I bought one with 114k and the motor seems to be in tip-top condition. My only concern is how well the automatic tranny is going to hold up.

Even if it looks to be in prestine condition i'd replace the timing belts and bearings, valve cover gaskets, plugs and wires if they havnt been done recently. Just typical maintance things. Good luck on the hunt for AWD :thumb:

I've got 106k, and I did a compression test last week to see if my HG went and compression was all above 170. I was shocked myself, because it was beat kind of hard. By the way, it was the turbo that croaked.

Yep you should have no problem pushing 170-180k before things start to go. I got 135,000 and it is running like a bat out of hell.

I bought mine with 124K on it, ran to 175K, then it got totalled, so I pulled the motor and put it in my '93. Now I have 180K on the bottom end, and a rebuilt head, no leaks or ticks, and it still pulled much better @ 175K with proper maintanance than it did @124K with original belts, seals, and plugs.

i got 108k on mine and the t-belt finally went out i think or the motor siezed one. i just had to be the different one here. everyone else had good things to say mine is the one that decided to crap out on me right before xmas and it was to late for santa to get me my parts. oh well there is always next year. :thumbdown

I have a 129K on my 98 GSX. I have had only two issues. At 127k the shifter started jumping out of 1st gear. The intermediate shaft roller bearing crapped out (design flaw and very common at this mileage) so I installed a shep tranny and installed a CFDF clutch at the same time. Also the car started to smoke and I determined that stock t25 (not timed) finally was worn out so I put a t28 in the car. I replaced the stock TB at 126K just because I thought it was time!

I have tons of DSM buddies with 150k+ cars that have been pounded on their entire life (yet maintained) and they are still running strong with great compression.

My car has 120k on it. At 99k the head was destroyed (balance shaft belt failure). 103K the transmission failed (I don't think the previous owner changed fluids very often).

If you take care of the car, you should be just fine. If you beat the crap out of it, expect to break things (duh :p)

oh well i was just talking about the motor LOL if you wanted the whole run down i got some spare time LOL. well first i had to replace the radiator after the whole plastic piece on the top shattered, then the ecu started to crap out on me (still working on that), then the thermostat went out (natural occurence) and now the motor so yeah i got a lemon. but what can i say it was the first car that i bought on my own with out any help. i got ripped off.

i got an auto na with 256000 still going strong but i think the tranny needs rebuilt its just my beater my good one is a 90 tsi 6 speed

Mines pretty good, couple of oil leaks nothing to major and i did a compression test and its all with about 4psi of where it should be, and its not like it hasnt been driven pretty hard. Just make sure there is no oil leaking onto the timing belt-900$ later it will never happen agian :p
