this problem is ruinning my life , its costed me over 400$ and it keeping me from having any form of a life . I NEED A ANSWER !!!!

about 2 weeks ago my alternator went and i had to replace it , a few days after that my belts started snapping ...one after another until ive tried everything i can think of and replaced all i can afford .

right now i have a brand new alternator in and crank pulley and belt . if i turn the car on my alternator pulley starts to heat up and eventually snaps my belt .

please any solutions could help .....

how tight should i have the belt?

my only guess is that the belt is skipping over the alternator pulley and causeing friction?

Yes, it sounds like the belt is slipping. Take some sand paper and lightly sand your alternator pulley to remove any glazing that has formed. Get a new alternator belt and pick up a Haynes or Chilton's manual while your at the parts store. In it, it should show you how to measure the tension in the belt, so you can make sure you have it tight enough.

got one....mmm i think theres something screwy with autozone alternators ....right now my solution is keep it tight and belt dressing ...maybe thats all i needed ...ppl keep telling me not to pull it 2 tight .

about how far up is you tensioner screw?

I don't have my manual off hands but in the book it says to use a pulley belt tensioner .. dont remember the actual lbs its supppose to be. I will look and see and post back. :thumb:

If you tension it to tight you can wreck the bearings in your alternator and cause premature wear on the belt.

ROFL!!! thats it? thats sounds mighty good consquences compared to what im going through...

If you keep using belt dressing, you'll end up on the side of the road with a dead car and a snapped alternator belt. I did this before. I tried to go one more month so that I could just fix it when I was home over Thanksgiving. Belt broke on my way home. If it weren't for my aunt living 3 miles away, towing would have cost a small fortune (even with AAA).

k ...new solutions anyone. and id still like 2 know how far up ppls alternator scres are?

Bro, Make shure you didnt Bend anything while overtightening the mounts.. If that Alt is off more then a few degrees the belt will drag on one side or the other of the pully, Causeing heat and belt breakage.

Check your alignment on that Alt.

The distance on the threads for the alt is going to veary a good amount. All belts are not exactly the same size and over time they strech. I wouldnt even use it a guide.Sounds like you need to take your alternato back could have badd bearings and some times those cheap autozone and advace auto pullys are cheap and pitted and I have even seen some with major imperfections. Or even the wrong pully (when this happens the auto part store just tells you to use the old one). When I get an alt. I allways use the old pully. I know it's a pain to take it off but it can make a big difffernce.

Also tigther you make the belt the more load you are putting on the water pump bearings and if that goes then you are in for a BIG$$$,
