I picked up a 96 talon with a coil on plug setup that was there for im guessing about 15-20k miles. One day Im driving down the street and come to a stop sign and all of a sudden the rpms drop down to 400 and the car is struggling to idle. Not even 5 seconds later smoke is coming out of my hood and it smells of burnt plastic.
I push the car into a space and pop the hood to see bits and pieces of melted plastic all over the coil pack plate and the coilpack closest to the drivers side is bubble up on one edge.
I pull the coil out and the rubber boot is cracked so I figure that caused it to arc and fail. I replace the cracked boot and start it up...it idle svery roughly then all of a sudden everything shuts off.....the interior lights, the safc, everything. So it blew my 30A ignition fuse and I replaced that. I turned the key to the on position to check the itnerior lights and the fuse blew after a few seconds.
i ordered a new prewired setup, soldered the coilpack connector on and plugged it in. I started the car and it idles very roughly as if its on 3 cylinders and as soon as I let out the clutch, even in neutral, it dies. i checked all the plugs and they are all good but the one closest to the drivers side (with the coilpack that burned out) had engine oil coated on the threads. I dont know what the problem could be, ive only had this car a month so i dont know too much about the problems/solutions that are common. thanks

Edit: it idles very lean...like 17.5-18+ on the wideband

It sounds rather similar to my issue...

The one thread helped me was the testing.(get a test light if you don't have one....they are cheap and very invaluble)

Luv2Rallye was also an immense help with this. Look up some of his posts to see if they might help as well.

And also testing the wire harness for the coil pack. If you have a hanes manual, it tells you how to do this. I mentioned it in my post #20. I could see about getting a pic of it unless someone has one already.
follow the wiring....that was the biggest help in tracking the short I had.....

If you did any recent wiring, I would double and triple check it.....shorts are never fun to deal with..... :|
