I just bought my 92 tsi about 2 months ago. i took it easy on it at first. when i started to get on it i noticed a grinding noise at about 3700rpm. i just had the crank pulley changed and i was told that it might the balancer shat? and that you can eleminate that altogether. the previous owner said that they just changed the timing belt on the car, from what i understand that the balancer shaft should have been re-alined at this time.

does anyone know how to eleminate the balancer shaft ?
or if i should just re-aline it how hard is that to do ?

most people eliminate the balance shafts, which is a hard laborus task imo.... i would say just re align them or take it to the dealer and have them fix it correctly, it may be expensive, but they will do it right...(at least the dealer i go to will)

Balance Shaft Removal isnt all that bad. All the DSM vendors sell kits and there are 1 million FAQ on how to do them. I say remove them

if i didnt get this taken care of for awhile how much damage are we talking ?
Well if the problem, as you explained in your first post, has anything to do with you timing belt or balance shaft belt you're playing with serious fire if you don't fix it quick. If you have read half the FAQ's threads in the "Newbie required reading" section on this site you would already know that anything like you have described can have expensive consquences. I am resisting the temptation to answer this fully because you should search the forum before starting a thread. Start reading up before you get slammed by the "Registered members". :shhh: :laser:

the meaning of the post was to see if anyone thougfht that the balancer shaft was the problem and which was the best way to go about fixing it.... i have read the faqs and have seen how to re-aline it i just dont know the difficulty

My bad, your question just seemed kind of vague and I hate when I see one of us Rookie members get attacked by the older members. Anyways, it all depends on if you do the work yourself or not. Taking everything apart takes all day in your own garage the alignment isn't hard just time consuming, I used my shop manual to do it. Again My Bad. :| :laser:

do you know anything about the kit to remove the balancer shaft..... how long does that take ?

I have read a lot of stuff on this site about how to do it and how much to spend and not spend. I bought the balance shaft eliminator kit from RRE and found the directions in the tech section, and my buddy and I did the work while my engine was being rebuilt. I can't give you the specifics on how to do it because it was awhile ago. But I can tell you this it wasn't easy and I would hate to do it with motor still in the car. If I had to do it agan I would take my car to the dealer. They'll do it and the parts are like $30 + labor, if you choose to do it yourself make sure you set aside a weekend to do it and have everything you might need to do it. I will search my files to see if I still have the directions or try to find the link. :laser:

Just as a side note in order to gaon the higher oil pressure you need to reinstall one of the cam bearings so it plugs up the oil galley going to that shaft. If there isn't going to be a shaft there you can install it and not line up the holes and it acts like a plug. I would think that is a little hard to do with the engine still in the car. I have enough trouble with cam and balance shaft bearings when everything is apart and on a bench. If I were you I would probably just realign my marks. It isn't too bad; doing a timing belt job.
