High idle and gas smell coming from exhaust

I recently just purchased my first 1g dsm and I'll be quite honest I don't know a ton about cars but that is the reason for this purchase I want to learn. I am having an idle problem right now. When I start the car it shoots up to 3k rps and just idles at that level. Once I shift in 1st and start letting off the cluth to give it gas the rpm's do go down but once I engage the cluth to shift into 2nd the rpms go back to 3k. Also another problem I have noticed is the amount of exhaust that is being produced and it smells like gas.

Tomorrow I am meeting with a guy who is pretty knowledgable with dsm's I would like to just get an idea of what the problem is so maybe I can fix it before something worse happens.

The high idle is symptomatic of a loose/broken/disconnected vacuum line. It could also explain your rich condition (the fuel smell you are getting from the exhaust). I would start with getting a repair manual, preferably a FSM. Then climb under the hood and start chasing vacuum lines.

Also check if your throttle is sticking and for exhaust leaks.

Also make sure your not missing any intake bolts.

i think we got it fixed. I believe it was an idle switch or some line that was unplugged.

Rich=No tune.

The computer compensates to protect the engine from knock by pouring more fuel into it. If its running rich all the time you have an issue and should investigate it...

I was gonna say... check all the connections to the throttle body... there should be two, one on side and one under in front.. I had that prob with my 2g.. removed the tb to clean it and forgot to pug all the shit back in.. had high idle.. saw it unpluged .. plugged it in poof salved..
