HI everyone, i just recently purschased a 91 talon tsi(the awd) and i have a few questions. I bought the car for 2100, it has 200k on the body and 65 on the motor, it also came with a boost controller and a safc(what is an safc?). They are electronic made my Apexi i believe. Also i just started it and it made a high pitch errriii noise for like 15 seconds and then went off. Also because of the placement of the Apexi electronics, the car has no stereo so what are my options for getting a stereo in their?
I plan on taking pictures in a little bit so don't worry. Any advice or answers to my questions would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Im kind of happy i didn't get the 88gt that i was about to get instead of this talon.
 
Only way to fix a grinding gear is rebuild the transmission. A shep stage one is around $1300 I believe, just to give you an idea of price. The transmissions are one of the notorious weak points of 1gs.
 
ouch thats about as much as much as i bought it for.Can i live with a grinding gear or no?And will the grinding affect perfomance? And is there anyway i can just get the transmission rebuilt or maybe just that gear or something else?
 
If the gears are grinding during shift, make sure that your cables are at the right setting at the shifter as well.

If it's a manual, there are a couple of adjustable cables under the center console that will pop off the post and sit in their 'natural' position. Just make sure the gear shift is in lined up with that position.

Hey, it looks like you're missing a couple of exhaust manifold studs, is that correct? Also check to see if they're stripped or just removed.
 
3rd gear grind doesn't necessarily mean his trans is done. Mine used to grind 3rd gear, changed my trains oil over to Penzoil syncromesh, problem has been gone for about a month and a half now. Shifts like butter.
 
yea those bolts are stripped/missing. Im not very knowledgable when it comes to cars at all. The first one is missing the rest just look ragedy LOL. And i might just have to meet up with a fellow dsm'er so they can do this because i would probably end up messing something up.
 
yeah man go to someone that has some dsm knowlege..NOT A SHOP, alot of times shops will screw some guys that dont have much knowledge yet, ive seen it happen many times and its stupid, just dont go and rip stuff apart either just have someone help you
 
i agree with lespaul, granted i support just ripping things apart. Buy the chiltons or any other manual and start with easy things, ie: fluids, brakes and easy to see and reach gaskets. The skys the limit with this car man, good luck!
 
thanks alot everyone for all the help. Im suppose to be meeting up with boostedinaz tomorrow so hopefully i can learn alot and he can help answer a few questions. And third gear doesn't grind, i grind LOL. Im getting better at driving so its all good.
 
Nice car... looks like it has quite a few mods.... DONT touch the SAFC if you mess it up you could seriously fry something.... Id say a greatr car for the price... be leary of mileage tho--- do ALL basic maintenence before racing at all

The SAFC is a piece of junk! I'll give you $10 for it!

Good pix Jeffrizzle ~! - A few comments from Uncle Buck...

That's a 2G Exhaust Manifold - EXCELLENT - but plan on pulling Radiator (4 Bolts, 2 Connectors, 2 Hose Clamps) & the Turbo & Housing as an ASSEMBLY & renewing all those Exhaust Studs & the associated Gaskets - Remembering of course that some of those Studs are in threaded holes in OPEN Oil Passages.

Replace all the Exhaust Turbo Shields during that evolution - Previous guy has probably ALREADY cooked the Power Steering O RINGS which will soon leak Power Steering Fluid on your Alt, kill the Voltage regulator INSIDE Alt & then KILL YOUR ECU soon after... While you have Radiator out is PERFECT time to replace all PS O-Rings as it makes a helluva mess.

That upper Radiator Hose looks ORIGINAL, plan on replacing ALL Coolant Hoses.

That Clutch Master Cylinder looks original, THERE is where to start on Shifting problems.

Hopefully previous guy has installed Air to Oil Cooler & shitcanned the POS Water to Oil Cooler, if not do so IMMEDIATELY~!

REMEMBER..., these things are like Hand Grenades waiting for some dumbass to pull the pin... You have a great opportunity here to have an inexpensive fun daily driver OR you can do something stupid & blow the whole thing up in a few seconds like half the Newbies on these Boards have done - It's up to you.
 
thanks Uncle buck for that information. I am currently working with boostedinaz in getting my cars maintance done. ANd boosted said the noise came from the belt thats below the timing belt(i forgot right now). I definately have my work cut out a little bit.
