i took my car to a tire shop to fix a flat and they told me my right front strut is saturated and will need to be fixed/replaced soon. they wanted to charge me like 350-400 bucks for it. does that sound right? will i find anything significantly cheaper than that? i live in new jersey, if anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

does your car feal bouncy
i think they are just adding to your problems (for money)
go to another shop and have them check if they think it is bad try and see if their is some one in your area that can do it (a member not a shop) parts are cheaper than that

$350-$400!
WTF! That probably includes some no name nonperformance part too. If you got tools do it yourself. You can do it. Then just take it in for a allaignmet and boom you've up upgraded your suspension for about the same price. Tokico HP's = $250 (approx.)

Click on suspension.

That would be a leaking strut.

If you'd fill out your user profile so that we knew what you were driving, the mystery may be a self-solving one.

When struts "break" [never], car falls down. They're just shocks. After enough miles, they'll weep.

Just finished up towing my car home due to a broken strut. It can, and apparently does happen. I swear my car is a lazy spoiled b*tch that doesn't like to be driven. It would rather be on jackstands then have gasoline pumping through its veins.

I know the pic looks like it's just a really sweet looking drop, but the fender is actually sitting on top of the tire. :toobad:

Wow, did you go over a massive pothole or something?

Yea. The city is doing construction and had a small section of the road cutout (like a manhole or something) that is not marked. I was doing about 30 when I went over it. :(

At first I thought that my control arm or something broke, but after jacking it up, it turns out that the lower part of the strut that the spring sits on, completely detached from the strut.

95carboneclipse: Do you have coil overs on that thing cause its slammed?

air23cary: There is no way I'd let ne shop put struts on my car. Looking back at my last car i'd for sure upgrade the suspension, struts, springs, and camber (if necessary) all at once. I went thru hell cause I bought my old car already lowered with just springs. Then i upgraded everything so it was right-after a while. If i would have just spent the like 270 bucks on struts and camber alone when i got it, then it would have all been cool. But no, i ended up out putting money for tires, flats, just nonsense. But yea, if performance isn't your bag, then get some buddies and a jack, tools, and a shop manual. And you'll save yourself a bundle

:talon:.

ebay - tokiko hp struts - direct replacement performance struts set of four ~ $275 shipped. only special tool required is coil compression tool, available at all auto parts shops, sears, harbor freight...

@95carboneclipse
Hey do you have any pics of the broken strut? I'm surprised you didn't damage anything else...

@OP, struts are easy to replaced, like the poster above me said, some tools, a spring compressor(probably the hardest part of it all to do) and some time to do it....

I'll get some when I take the strut out and post them.

I think the OP is driving a 1G therefore tokicos are out of the question since they dont make them for the 1G. AGX or Koni yellow ftw

The OP posted this thread in 2004. Pay attention to dates, everyone. No need to bump four year old posts unless directly related to the subject at hand. In this case, a BLOWN strut is a little different than a LEAKING strut.
