Help please. Used Tokioco Illumina's (pic's)

A local guy is intrested in trading me a set of used Tokioco Illuminas with Eibach springs for $250 + my old Dejpn UICP. Any advice on how to tell if they are in good shape, or any missing parts would be highly appricated. Thanks.. Scott

The best you can do is make sure the shocks are both harder to compress and rebound slower when set to stiff. Not much else you can do without "real" equipment.

The other parts you need are all to be re-used from your current set-up.

Thanks for the reply. Reused parts, like the sleves? Also, arn't the Illuminas supose to have adjustable dials on the top of the strut? I don't see those in the pictures..

I can't remember if Illuminas use a small screw-driver or what, but they should be adjustable.

Assuming a good UICP is worth $100, I don't like the deal. $350 for a used ProKit/Illumina setup doesn't seem worth it when you don't know the shape of the shocks (and they are missing the adjusters). Plus, I don't like that setup, anyway.

the shocks still have shine on them, they couldnt be that old.
if your giving your UICP away for this you have something else/better?

Not sure what you mean. if your'e asking if I have somthing better on my car then my old Dejon Tool UICP, my mods are in my profile. I thought $50 was all that would be worth, I've never been able to sell it, even for $60. It's just time to get rid of my 3 year old blown struts..

One by one, take each shock and compress the piston into the chamber. (can turn upside down and push on floor) It should be pretty firm (not go in easily). The piston should also pop back out when released and extend fully on it's own...it wont pop out super fast or anything but it should push back out by itslef no problem.

If I remember correctly (its been awile since the cars in storage) but you shouldn't compress the Illuminas by turning them upsidedown on the floor. I believe they have a plastic insert in the end of the piston shaft that you'll end up breaking.

Basically the only things you could be missing is each shock has a small red cap that fits on the end of the piston shaft. I has the firmness nubers marked on it so without these caps you can tell what the shock is adjusted to. I didn't happen to see these caps in the pics but maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. The Illuminas adjust via a slot in the end of the piston shaft so you won't see a big knob like some of the other shocks use. They look to be in good shape, so do what jtmcinder said & you should have a good idea of their condition.

Correct. The ajdusting knob is a plastic tip which protrudes slightly beyond the threaded tip of the strut. If this breaks then you will have no way of adjusting it. It is slotted for a small flat head screwdriver. There should be a cap that slides onto the tip which has markings to indicate which setting the strut is set at. However, even without it you can figure out where it is at by counting clicks. Turn all the way CCW until it stops and you will be at "1", the softest setting. Each click turned clockwise stiffens it up to a max of "5". You can also get a set of 4 new caps from Tokico. I did this once and they didn't even charge me. But that was several years ago.

Yours stop when you try & turn them below 1 or past 5? I'm 99.9% sure mine will turn freely all the way around without any stop. Maybe if you turn them around enough times they eventually stop giving you a starting point, I don't know. But I know I have never felt a stop on mine.

You're absolutely right. I truly remembered them as stopping but I was wrong. I just went out and checked. Good catch Daren. Sorry if I confused anyone.

I guess there is a good reason you have more green bars than me.

Man both those products have lifetime warranty. You got a steal of a deal. I just sold the same setup, pros and illumnis for $400US.

Its a great setup, never had any problems. Plus the lifetime warranty. If they ask for a receipt for warranty, just write one up
