quebec,
Hi fellow DSMers!

I am getting sick of my boring grey interior. I was thinking about painting my whole interior black. Now, what brand of paint/dye did you people who did it use? How did it work out? I want a flat black (OEM style) finish. What steps should I follow to make sure it'll look good (in terms of prep) ?

I was also considering a real aluminum dash trim kit. What do you think of the OEM black/aluminum scheme? Any better company than others in means of dash trim kits? Also, I want REAL aluminum, not plastic with an aluminum color. Any recommendations?

I pretty much need the dash trim kit, as I ordered an aluminum 2 gauge vent bezel recently, so it'd look kinda weird if that was the only aluminum piece in the whole interior...

Any opinions, inputs, suggestions, ideas accepted! Feel free to post.

For vinyl parts I like using this stuff called molecubond (might have been discontinued though since I haven't seen any lately), and on hard plastics I scuff them with 180 or 220 grit, then use adhesion promotor, filler primer and duplicolor paint followed by duplicolor clearcoat. As long as you don't gouge things with screwdrivers, the paint holds up quite well, and as long as the panels that you do is cleaned well before and wiped down with wax and adhesive remover and allowed to dry, the vinyl is damn-near unscratchable.

For the painting of interior panals and all try and use the truck bed coater... i think its made by Krylon .. it leaves a lil texture, but it works really well and is durable.. good luck :thumb:

I was at this place and meet a guy does custom interior for old muslce cars. What he said was go to any car paint place to find special plastic painter. Its like a primer but he told me that it works really well on plastic panel and finish with krylon paint. I havent find or had time to go look for it but when i do ill let you guys know.

Molecule bond is good stuff you can still pick it up at Walmart or atleast around here. I perfer to use Duplicolor Vinyl/fabric dye, it comes in a spray can and is extremely easy to work with if you can spraypaint. This is a dye to so It will soak in it's not just a paint that will flake off, I've had it in my car for about 2 years and still looking great :thumb:

I've tried the duplicolor stuff and it works well depending on what you are trying to accomplish. If you're looking for more of an OEM matte finish then the molecubond stuff is excellent, but if you're looking for a nice glossy "just armoralled look" then the duplicolor is the stuff to use.

What about the dash trim kits?
Any other brand/ seller better than other? quality? fit?

the best platic spray re color paint I haver used is Marhyde. A little expensive, but it dyes the plastic to a good depth so scratches do not show the old color.
Vinyl/cloth is the duplicolor stuff.
