Hey fellas, I just bought a virtually brand f*cking new T3/T4 from a guy locally for $350 (turbo and Turbonetics Deltgate). It had ZERO shaft play, spun ever so freely, and was cleaner that any engine part I have ever seen. I need some help determining the specs of it. The guy I bought it from got it as a kit and has no idea what the specs are. The side of the compressor housing has an imprint that says "A/R 50" Maybe a 50 trim compressor wheel. Next to this marking reads "M43" I measured the compressor inlet to be 3" and outlet to be 2". Thus, is it not a TO4E compressor housing? The turbine housing looks like a standard garret housing. Markings on the flange to the manifold read 20357 on the outside and 35 on the inside.

I will take pictures if you need a better look. Thanks for all your help.

Thanks,
Jake

The compressor housing you've got is a t04b. I'm not sure about the turbine housing. You'll have to measure the wheels and provide pics for us if you want to know what turbo you have.

OK, I have pics...

Alright, I took the housings off and measures the wheel. I found the following diameters...

bottom: 2.8648 in
top: 2.1088 in

Can someone tell me using these numbers what wheel I have?

Thanks,
Jake

6 blade compressor wheel is and should be a T04E trim wheel. it's prolly like 50, 57. 60 trim is little bigger if I remember right. Used to be a website with all the demensions of Garret wheels.

Your turbine wheel is older style 11 blade. if you measure the outlet, you can see if it's a stge I or Stage III. Stage I=2 inches Stage III=2.24inch and stage V which is 10 blade wheel is 2.5 inch. (11 blade 2.5 would be a P-trim.

Alright, so it's a 54 trim. Not a great wheel for DSM? Should I slap it on eBay and make a few bucks?

Jake

My buddy in a Miata had the 54 trim and made 350whp with it and he only made 367 with a 60trim after that so It's pretty well equivelant in power production to a 60trim from what we found. He upgraded to the 60 from the 54 and hardly made any extra power. That really sucks for him..

Oh well he just bought a Precision 50trim this week so hopefully he can break the 400whp mark on turbo only. (he made 460whp with nitrous last year)

Its a good turbo, don't be discouraged, and will make descent power, just after 350whp other turbos keep going easier and with more power. If your planning around or under that mark then it will be just fine for you. Still a nice setup.:thumb:

See that list? 10 people on it, 8 of them using nitrous. Please do me a favour and email everybody on that list and let them know that YOU think they are cheating with nitrous and should stop using it.

That is different, thats just to go down the quarter, but theres assholes out there who got their stock mustangs and can beat you just because they put in 100 shot, that's what pisses me off.

Well yeah that pisses me off too, however the Miata in question pulls an 11.20 @ 131mph. He is the Fastest miata in the world (not the quickest, Rick Stevens went 10.98 @ 127mph) and did so on DOT drag radials which is pretty cool.

I don't think nitrous is ever cheating, and I have been beaten buy a guy spraying 100hp shot on a 5.0 who then afterwards denied he had nitrous. It's was pretty obvious when in 4th gear he pulled like a freight train on me. That upsets me, but only because I didn't have enough, not because he was cheating. Run what you brung and I got beat, so I just go back and do more, no big deal.

Carefull! Your experience may have netted these results. But you should not throw a 54trim and 60trim in the same catogory. A 60trim compressor wheel is capably of generating over 500whp...a 54trim is not. The 60trim is a great pump gas wheel, the 54trim, eh, just ok. Your buddy making little improvement from the upgrade, most likely tuning related.

Absolutly not tuning related, he runs a FJO stand alone and is a master with the software (much like a Tec3 system). The turbo simply did not produce anymore HP switching from a 54tim to a 60trim on exactly the same setup. Nothing was changed except for the turbo. The car was run at 26psi of boost on C16, the runs were within a few weeks of each other and very few other variables were different (maybe temperature a bit etc.) both turbo's had a .63 A/R stage 3 wheel, both were from turbonetics.

Unfortunately there was no gain in HP and nothing else was changed. Feel free to look at compressor maps and what other people have said blah blah, but in real world the 60 trim is no better than the 54. We tested it, and re-tested it and did everything we could to make it better and it was not. The proof is in the pudding as they say. Unfortunately we will not be able to test the 50 trim in the same manner as he built a new motor with more compression.

I'm sure the 60trim has gone fast on other cars or made HP or whatever but that does not mean those same results could not be accomplished with a 54 trim on those cars. Believe me we did everything and could not make more power at the same boost level. It was very dissappointing and to turbo was run for a few months at the end of last year before eventually being sold.

A car very similar in setup to my car made 38 less WHP than I did with a 60trim vs. my 50trim. (both running 660cc SAFC turbonetics manifold and turbo, 3" downpipe no cat, etc etc.. almost exactly the same setup except for the turbo) I have had two experiences with the 60 trim and both have been unfavorable with the turbo producing less than expected HP. My personal experience with the turbo on two different cars has led me to believe that it's no better than the 54 trim. Feel free to disagree with me, thats your choice, however I have tried with that turbo and not had any success with it. My belief comes from my personal experience with it, and for me thats enough proof.

Well thank you everyone that commented. I'm glad I finally figured out which wheels I have. I plan on keeping the turbo unless I can get over 400 for it. Plus, there are many other things I could be spending my money on (like ::cough:: exhaust ::cough:: ::cough:: suspension ::cough::). Thanks again for your help.
