Help an newbie out

Okay. As i'm sure most of you who have read any of my threads know, I am new to working on cars. I am 17 and this is my 2nd car, first that i've worked on. What I am wondering, is what I can replace (not too expencive) to get it running closer to new again. I mean no more than a total of a couple hundred dollars if that. I know I need a tune up, what goes into that with this car. I am going to flush my coolant system, what do I use to turn the little nozzle so the coolant comes out? Any other suggestions? Possibly with pictures since I do not know what many things are. Thank you

I reccomend that you go buy a Chilton Manual, it tells you how to do almost anything. Stuff to do in tune up: change plugs and wires, check all belts for wear (replace if needed), replace all fluids, pressure check the cooling system. This should get you started. As for the coolant question: get under your car and look at the bottom left side of the radiator, you will see a wing nut, unscrew this with you fingers and the coolant will pour out. If you are flushing it with a hose make sure you remove the thermastat, and when you reinstall it make sure you put it in the SAME way you took it out. Hmm, I know where the nut is, reason I asked what tool I should use is it seems to be very stiff, and I dont wish to break it. Im going to be buying a Service Manual monday, this will override the chiltons, correct?

Yeah those manuals will help you out.


If you want a COMPLETE reference guide look around for a set of "Shop Manuals" they are the best things to have. They have everything in them that you could ever need and more. They are pretty pricey, but after a clutch install or several small replacements, they pay for themselves.

Service manual is different from chiltons, in the the service manual is what all the mitsu dealships get for the techs to reference to. They tell you everything!!
