Any suggestions on what to look for or even where to find SNELL approved helmets? I made it by my first event with my brother's spare helmet, but admittedly it wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world.

Also I noticed that in my normal driving poistion I would contact the roof of my 2G, thus having to tilt the seat back. I'm only 5'8 so theoretically I should fit :D

I am much too tall for 2Gs and did a lot of searching before buying. The flattest-top helmets I found were HJCs. That they are also a good value didn't hurt, either.

Here is the brain bucket I roll, great fit, reasonably priced, snell 2005 car approved. They make nice full-face pieces too.

I assume your pic(s) didn't show up.

I've worn both open and full face helmets. The open face are more comfortable, but I worry about my face during a crash or flying shrapnel. As far as I know they don't do eye transplants yet. Eating threw a straw because your jaw is wired shut doesn't sound like much fun either.

Your best bet for good fitment is to actually try on the helmet before you buy it. They all fit differently. Some fit tighter through the cheeks. Some smash your ears others your nose. Find a local speedshop and test fit different helmets. If you find some you like, but don't like their price, haggle with them, or buy it online. Try to support your local speedshop if they're close on the price. They keep products in stock and can be quite helpful. It's also nice to be able to pick something up on the way out of town before your race. If you have to order it online, you either have to wait for it or pay for quick shipping. It could be the difference between racing that weekend, or at home completing a list of chores. But anyway, above all else make sure it fits. You don't want it to slide down over your eyes on every bump. If you can, bring the car you'll be using it in so you can see if you'll even fit. One last thing I can think of, if you plan to use a HANS or similar device make sure it has the proper attachment points.

I've been looking for shops in my area, just haven't devoted enough time into it. I met one of the vendors at the last event, but they are located in Austin which is a 2 hour trip.

You touched up on a nice subject about the open face helmets, and I must agree. I do like the ventilation it provides, but if I can survive in an in enclosed helmet in Texas heat, then I'll side with the extra saftey.

If you plan on running any wheel-to-wheel a closed face helmet is a must. I can't tell you about all the tire rubber, gravel, nuts and bolts, and small birds OMG , that have found their way in through my window hitting my face shield. It's definitely a rude awakening and the protection is well worth it...

Tell me about it....

I live a little bit out in the country kind of...

one day, driving home with my windows open, a bird smashes into my a-pillar at a slight angle, scared the crap outta me, feathers and blood EVERYWHERE inside my car....

I think I need a full faced helmet just in day to day driving....
