I have a 93 TSI AWD. So i was drivin down the freeway when all the sudden I saw a cloud of smoke behind my car so I pulled over and found oil running out all over the place but could not find were it was coming from, but it dripped it dry. At no piont did the oil pressure drop,so i added oil to find out were it was leaking from and found nothing, no leak notta. So I filled er up and went to start it but it wouldnt start. So I towed it home and replaced the head gasket and timing belt thats the only thing I could think of. And now it barley idles and then dies and at times knocks like hell. Any suggestions?

Sounds like Julias when we bought it. Started knocking, dumping what looked like oil(but the dipstick always showed full) and it turned out to be bearings( balance shaft to be exact). We never did figure out how we dumped fluids and everything was full, but it was like a puddle as big as the car. Changed the bearings , did a balance shaft eliminator and it ran great. :thumb:

thanks so much for the info. now since I'll be taking the motor out should I stick with replacing the 7 bolt bottom end or go to a 6.And why?

You want to put a 6 bolt in, just remember though you'll need to replace the flywheel (or driveplate if automatic) as well.
6 bolt is a better motor.

Agreed. You will never have someone tell you "you have crankwalk" . Easiest solution to most 7 bolt problems ROFL

hey shady1...

since you are gunna drop your engine and throw in a 6-bolt, how about you throw on your cylinder head from your 93awd onto the 6-bolt you are going to get....

93's and 94's have the best camshafts of all years, from 90-99 4g63t engines.

you might as well throw on a new head gasket and water pump, balance shaft elimination new ARP head studs and revised 3gen lifters while you are all up in the mix.

my 92 awd(red) has a 6-bolt block and a 93 4g63t head on it.

sounds great do u know if my 7 bolt clutch will fit a 6 bolt, and is there a good place to get an upgraded short block? And where to get those lifters?
thanks
