So I just recently acquired a 90 Talon TSi AWD with 121k on it with HKS Adj shocks with ground control coil overs and front and rear ST sway bars. The previous owner told me he was driving on the freeway going about 70-80 in 4th when all of a sudden the car shuts down. He tries to start the car but no go. He tows the car home and checks the bay. Checks the dipstick and sees that there's an oil/water mix in the pan. Now to the good stuff. I have some pics of the block and gasket but also I want you guys to check out Cyl #1 and how it has a small gap in the top right corner between the piston and wall. I already turned the crank manually and it spins good with all cylinders moving up and down. Btw it's been sitting for 2 years now and it had the water just sitting in the engine. I found that there was some rust on the cams(just on it not eating the metal away) and was wondering if there's a good chance there's rust all inside my block lurking on my rods or crankshaft? If there is is there anyway to get that sucker cleaned out(i.e. ATF/Oil mix while running the car) w/out having the rust do any serious harm to my block? Will I need to get the block decked? Thanks guys. PS thinking of just picking up a used head unless I should just get my old head rebuilt, Also bought a stock metal head gasket and will be using all new belts/pulleys and probably gonna do a BS removal. Watcha guys think?

If water has been sitting in that engine for about 2 years...I would just suggest a complete rebuild w/ boring/honing. Yes you will need to get the block surface checked for warpage, same with the head. If there is rust on your cams, then there is more than likely rust on your pistons, rods and crank. That gap between the cyl. and the piston definitely should not be there and will cause problems with compression and performance. Apperently you do need a new head pretty much(due to the water) and a new bottom end...So, while I don't get why you bought the car...You might as well search the junk yards and just swap the engines out, unless you want to just rebuild that one completely, for performance sake.

Sorry if I missed anything, hope I helped

I bought the car cause it was only $650 with awesome suspension and rims :D . So I saw that he ghetto'd the knock sensor wiring up and that one wire isn't even connect. I think he detonated really bad. So maybe that's the reason why there's a nice little chunk outta the #1 cylinder(most lean cylinder).

Looks like you figured it out. I would still suggest a complete rebuild or find a totaled TSi that you can buy the engine from and swap it into yours. Maybe in the mean time you can get a kit for yours and build that one up, get it bored, honed, the works! Anyways, i'm rambling, sorry. Goodluck from now on out :thumb:

Since your on the west coast you can probably find a pretty decent used japanese engine for under 900. That would end up making your 600 dollar car a 1500 dollar car, still not that bad.

We have been getting engines with turbos and intake manifolds recently. One of them even came with 510cc injectors and a 16g turbo.

If you drop the pan and pull number one I bet part of the piston is gone, is the cumbustion chamber messed up on #1, and is there any damage to the turbo?

I checked the whole wall on the #1 cylinder and it looks unharmed. I've only found motors here in SoCal for 1300+. Got any references or sites?

did this headgasket have this gap it in when you took it off? because if it did the headgasket definetly blew if you already didnt know that.

i was amazed that the damn thing broke like that. the short time i have been working on cars i havent seen one that bad! most of the one's i have seen have been little creases in the head gasket.

Thanks for all the replys guys. Actually I found another car locally that I'm going to purchase ASAP and swap over all of my suspension from my current talon to the new talon I'm buying. Anyone interested in a rolling shell with blown motor but good tranny and everything else? Even LEATHER interior? Peace

And yes it was exactly like that when I took the head off. Thats what bad gas will do for detonation :barf:

you should see what happens when a whole side of the headgasket on the cylinder is missing.flames shoot everywhere.and it looks like the piston detonated.i wouldnt trust those bearings if the water has been sitting in there for 2 years either.
