My haynes manual says that the tightening steps for the head bolts are as follows.

step 1: 58Ft.-Lbs.
step 2: Loosen completely
step 3: 15Ft.-Lbs.
step 4: Tighten 1/4-turn
step 5: Tighten 1/4-turn further

This just doesn't sound right to me and was wondering what you guys think.

With my ARPs I went 50, 75, 100, 115, following the torque sequence each time. This was on a 6 bolt with a 93 head, Mr Gasket head gasket, and using oil, not moly lube, to torque them as it was the second time they were used.

Wow!! Out of all of you guys who have taken off your head, or had to change a head gasket, there is only one person who thinks these specs may be right. 15lbs. just doesn't sound tight enough. Any more opinions would be greatly apreciated.

It looks strange, but is probably right. I haven't had a chance to check my service manual for 2Gs, but a full 1/2 turn from 15 ft-lbs can be an incredible amount of torque difference, depending on the thread pitch (which is usually very narrow on head bolts).

I must admit that while I mentioned the steps are strange-looking, I've never torqued TTY (torque-to-yield) head bolts, either. 2G head bolts are TTY, which means that the bolts actually stretch as you torque them (that's how they're designed). For this reason, if you're not using ARPs, make sure you have a fresh set of stock head bolts (don't reuse old ones!)

If someone else can confirm the head bolt torque steps for 2G's, please speak up.

I can confirm that those silly specs are indeed correct.
This clip is from my CD-ROM Factory Service Manual....

Before you finish, you should know that there are two torque settings. One torque setting is for used with ARP moly lube. The other torque setting is used with 30 weight oil. You don't necessarily need to follow the manual with regards to first torqueing to 15# then making 90* turns.

Just make sure you get the sequence right. I torqued in steps 15#, 30#, etc . Off hand, I forget what the torque specs are so just reference the instructions that came with your stud kit.
