hard start, rough idle, dies in drive, but not in reverse? HELP!!!

I have an 95 eclipse gs 158xxx, its just a stock 420a with a cone filter( from what i know) i just traded my 96 geo tracker for this car. when i test drove it it ran great hauled, did 125 up the mountain, gas light came on, i got gas. ran fine, went 125 miles, filled up again but this time it started running funky( missing, spits really bad) when touching the gas rpms go from 1500 to 3000 to 2500, bounces really bad. It's hard to start i have to pump the gas to get it running. it sometimes idles right on 1k but sometimes its at 400 and ready to die. I put it in gear an it dies. i put it in reverse though an it still runs, thats what i don't get. Any ideas? i'm new to dsm's an would like some ideas. Let me know thanks! This is my only car right now, an my code reader is for 96+

Is it throwing a CEL? Maybe a tune up would help.

It is throwing a cel, but my reader only works on 96+ and the plugs,wires,and dist are all good. the fuel pump is also working. I was thinking maybe a filter?

fuel pressure for the 420a should be right around 43 psi.

Can you take it to an auto parts store, they should check the codes for free. Is the air filter dirty? Maybe the fuel filter is starting to get clogged.

I can't get it to the store, and the filter is good. I'd like to get a new fuel filter, I need to get to autozone to get it. so i have to wait for a ride

I believe most parts stores rent out tools so you can take it where the car is, might want to see if they rent out scan tools while your there.

The code reader should work. Isn't it still OBD2 on 95s?

Mines a 95' and OBD2. that's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure if it applied to non turbos. have you tried plugging in the scan tool at all?

Yeah, its an auto. I've looked under the dash. Where else would it plug in?

You looked under the dash and didn't see the connector? If you look under the dash, it should be to the bottom right of the steering column next to the console side cover. Someone correct me if I'am wrong.

That's where it was on the non turbo I almost bought. Hunt around for it if you can't find it. If you previous owner was THAT jank to remove it, goodness....

Found the problem, after tinkering under the hood. I bumped the egr valve an the motor died, so i clean it up cleaned all the hoses an it runs like a champ agaiin
