grinding/clunking sound when braking

I have a 2g and when I apply the brakes there is a grinding/clunking sound from the rear passenger side brakes. I have taken the wheel off and can't see anything wrong, broken, etc. Any ideas on what it might be?

ABS acting up? on my 1G it did something like that till I took out the fuse?

someone told me that it could be a problem with my brake shims. anybody else experienced something like this? on any car?

I've got the same thing goin on right now, but it's driver's side, 1g. Let me know what ya find. Three possiblities I've encountered are lack of shims, siezed caliper, and wheel bearing.
