Need some help with this one. I finally got the Talon running last night after about a 8 month sit!!!! :hellyeah: Anyways, when I put the car into 1st gear it grinds and kicks out. Every other gear works good. No grinding or kicking, and is easy to shift into. I have replaced the oem shift linkage bushings with the aluminum bushings. I have read the tech manuals about the synchros and I'm worried. Is there any way to fix this issue?? Thanks.

Josh

IF its grinding sounds like sychros popping out of gear, tranny problem. Ive been there, replaced everything esle came down to the tranny, its had lot of miles on it.

Check the master cylinder adjustment rod under the dash (can be found here: RRE's Clutch And Flywheel Tech Info under "Clutch Adjustment" near the bottom of the page). Also pull that boot back to be sure it's not leaking. It sounds like you might have a problem similar to one I had in which the clutch isn't completely disengaged (but extremely close) when it should be. MT-90 or not, I would get locked out of first at anything over a crawl. Everything else was peachy.

Do the adjustment first, and if you're still having a problem, it may be an issue inside the tranny. Let's hope not. If you're running an average gear oil, you might consider searching this forum, as there are several fluids people seem to prefer for their ability to pacify the warring bits and pieces inside out transmissions.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info!!! Right now the car will grind and kick out of 1st gear from a stop. Every other gear seems to be fine. The clutch was recently replaced as well. I'm hoping it's just an adjustment. The tranmission only has about 98k on it. The engine (97 4G63T) has about 110k on it.

Even better, Lofty posted this video by Jack (Jack's Transmissions) in a topic I created regarding shifting issues. Getting closer to time for me to actually put the info to use.

This is the procedure to correctly adjust clutch engagement. I didn't learn much, but it was good to have a demonstration performed by a professional with which to compare my procedures. I guess some people don't realize they can only adjust so far without blocking off the fluid reservoir.

Helpful nonetheless:
YouTube - Proper Clutch Adjustment

This is a common adjustment needed after installing a new clutch, one that many people seem to miss.

Do not! drive the car! When first gear is popping out from a take off, there is a good chance the intermediate shaft err I am blanking, it's late and I can't think, is moving inside and will reshape and wear out the area that its rests on. If you drive on it enough it will wear that area out and won't be able to be usable. I know I did not describe this the best but for the most basic explanation this is what will happen. I went through the same thing when I bought my car 3 years ago. Call one of the DSM trans shops and they will be able to explain it much better than I.

I hope I am wrong and it's something dumb.

Ok...You just scared the crap outta me on that one. I'll use Jack's video to adjust the clutch. I'm just hoping an adjustment is all it needs. Thanks for the video REY.

Same thing happened to me in trans number 1. It ended up being a combination of extremely worn intermediate driveshaft bearings and worn shift fork. After going through trans number 2 i took trans one out of storage tore it apart, replaced those bearings and shift fork and its as good as new.

I haven't tore into it yet. I don't get outta school till 10pm tonight. :( It sucks. I'll let all of you know what the issue is. I'm just hoping it isn't the transmission. I can't afford another one at the moment. And I haven't a clue how much a rebuilt 7 bolt AWD 5 speed is going to be. I plan on tearing into it tomorrrow afternoon. Start praying.

Well sounds like a trans issue, anyway popping out of gear, the gears are in the trans, let us know. Rebuilt trans, not cheap, try tre, i got a great deal.
