GM 3" MAF question...

I'm looking to run a GM MAF on my 91 GSX. Can any 3" GM MAF sensor be run in a blow-through application? I come from a Ford background and when supercharging/turbocharging them you have the option of running a blow-through or draw-through. Each required a MAF for that specific application(blow-through or draw-through). I see alot of DSM's running a 3" GM sensor but they don't specify whether they are blow-through or drawthrough.
I want to run a blow-through to maximize spool time and allow venting of the BOV(cheesy i know. I just loved the vented BOV on my turbocharged Hayabusa)

Blow-thru is the way to go, never heard of any DSM with drawthrough? Heres a link to cars with the GM MAF you need with some additional information.

Any 3" GM Maf sensor will do the job just fine, also any MAF-Translator (for DSM of course) will work for either way you wish to setup your Intake.

Basically it dependes on how you route your piping, but the MAF sensor of Maf Translator don't play any difference in that particular subject.
 
Ahhh, i knew there had to be some info somewhere. I did a search with gm maf and came up with WAAAAY too much to go through(though i did go through some). I never thought to use the MAFT in my search!

I ordered a snow performance stage II water injection kit. It comes with a controller with a built in MAFT specifically for use with a gm sensor. There is an output so it can tie into the factory maf wires. Anyone used that instead of the MAFT?
 
The MAF Translator kit you will order will do almost anything you need. It has a seperate wire for nitrous/alcohol/water injection set to kick in at whatever point you program into it.

In order to run the GM MAF (either draw/blow through) you WILL need the translator though, not sure if thats what you were asking in your last post or not.
 
Yeah, i knew that i needed a translater as the GM sensors output is in hertz and the eclipse is in volts(as is most others). Here is the kit i'm getting:

After talking with Snow Performance, they told me that the variable controller that they use to inject the water/meth has a MAFT built in(the one i linked to) and it has an output(in volts) that i can hook my factory eclipse wires to. This saves me $200 for a MAFT. I just hope it works like they say it will...
BTW, i'll also be using a dsmlink and 660cc denso injectors. Anything else i'd need?

Their stg II kit comes with a variable controller. Their are 3 STGII kits. One is $399 and the controller adds the water/meth based on boost pressure. Another is $399 and that controller adds the water/meth based on the MAF(std with 5volt output). Then there is the one i want which adds the water/meth based on the MAF from a GM sensor(with Hertz output). This kit is $439 and uses a MAFT built-in to convert to a 5volt. This controller has an output that can be spliced into the factory MAF harness.
Since i'm going with the stg II kit for MAF anyway, its only 39.00 more for the MAFT option. If this works i save by not having to buy a seperate MAFT. If not, i'm out the xtra 39.00 and i still have to buy a maft. Make sense?
 
That makes sense.

Does this kit allow you to tune using the translator? The DSM MAF-T allows you to tune, and if this translator doesn't allow you to tune then you will need to get an AFC or DSMlink or equivalent to tune with.
 
1. DSM sensors read in Hz, not volts. They are Karmen count sensors, not 0-5v hotwire sensors.

2. I'm trying to figure out what GM sensors they are using this with because I was sure that all of their 3" and 3.5" sensors are hotwire sensors that use volts as their output, not hertz. The only sensors I'm coming up with that have square wave outputs are the old style hot-film MAF's that were used on turbo Buicks in the 80's, but those range from 32-150 Hz, way below the range of a DSM sensor, which reads 150 Hz at idle and up to 3200 Hz at WOT (it only logs up to 1606 Hz, though).

3. Either way, the frequency range matters because if they are not close to what a DSM ecu normally sees, engine performance will suffer because it is expecting one reading and getting another. If they're close enough, you could compensate with a SAFC to alter the reading to the ECU, but with a frequency range as radically different as what I pointed out earlier, not even a SAFC can compensate for that.

After looking at this produt further, and in particular the electronic variable controller, I've come to the conclusion that it is not a MAF translator. That controller is designed to replace the Hobbes switch that most water injection folks use when making thier homebrew kits. Instead of using the hobbes switch as an on/off switch, this controller will adjust the amount of water injected based on what it sees from that MAF. It will not alter the signal to the ecu, and like I've said before, I'm not sure what GM sensors use a Hz output since the 3" and 3.5" sensor are hot-wire units. It's a good system for folks who are using a blowthrough setup, but in the end, you may still need to get a translator.
 
When switching to a GM MAF, blow through is by far the most popular choice. Most people go this route so that they are able to vent their blow off valve to the atmosphere for a louder whoosh sound. Personally, I like to keep things quiet and inconspicuous, but it is a personal choice. Also blow through may offer better spool up based on a better flowing inlet for the turbo. Either way, the upgrade to the GM MAF is a good upgrade, the MAF translator will also allow you to install larger injectors without the need for an SAFC or an engine management.
