Hey guys, need some input on this... I just bought a car with a salvage title without realizing it until it was too late, yeah I got burned but thats not the point LOL.. The car is 100% driveable and everything is 100% functional, it just has some body damage to the rear quarter panel and door. I have to take it to get the inspection to get a rebuilt title but I haven't made any repairs. Does anyone have experience with this? Are they going to nitpick the body damage or do they typically look past it if the car is 100% driveable and functional? The door opens and closes fine and the window rolls up and down.

I know each state has its own regulations but this is in Ohio and my buddy says he has done this before with a car that had body damage and it passed with no problems but that seems weird that they would issue a rebuilt title on a car that hasn't actually had the repairs made. I'll get a picture up as soon as I can for a visual.

Please let me know if you have had experience with a similar situation or if you personally know someone who has because I have no experience with this and don't want to pay more than one inspection fee.

Even if I have to get a new door and pound out the rear quarter its not that big of a deal, the damage just doesn't bother me and I wouldn't want to spend time or money repairing it if I don't have to because its going to be my winter beater and I'm going to keep it and drive it til the wheels fall off because it wouldn't be worth selling. Its a 2000 Olds Intrigue that i picked up for $1000 if that matters at all. I talked the guy down from $1500 but had I known it had a salvage title when I was looking at it i would have offered much less. Live and learn I guess, make sure you look at the title BEFORE negotiating.

Thanks in advance for any advice! Hope you guys had a good Christmas and are going to have a new years to remember!

They shouldn't have a problem as long as it is fully functional and SAFE. They should overlook any type of body damage. As long as the car isn't splitting in half like Herbie.

Yea you will be fine, the title only means the damage was more then what the car was worth. Yea with the price, they usually take around 3-5k off of the price on a rebuilt title. I would have no problem in buying a car like that at all. The only thing is you won't beable to trade the car into a dealer.

If you have no problem keeping the car, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Here are pictures of the damaged door

I went through this a few years ago. I Live in SE Ohio. I had he car inspected in Jackson. Here is a few things that may help you:
1. Nothing Illegal on the car. For example in Ohio any window tint darker than 50% will cause you to fail inspection. They checked my car for the cat. converter also.
2. You have to provide reciepts for any parts bought for the car.
3. I am also pretty sure that whatever damage to that caused the car to be totaled has to be repaired. A deer hit the side of a Neon I was driving. I had to have a new door and fender before I could get an inspection permit.
4. All of the normal BMV inspection items need to work. Turn signals, headlights, tail lights, Licence plate lights. There can be no cracked or broken glass
5. You also need to go to the BMV and get an inspection permit then you need to call the inspection center and get a date for the inspection. You can't get a date for inspection without a permit number. BTW, the BMV will give you a checklist. There is usually about a 6 week wait for inspections, at least here in SE Ohio.
I hope this was helpful. It is actually not that bad of a process. You can PM me if you have any more questions.

Aint no way you gonna get it past inspection before it is repaired,in Maryland salvage inspections are done by the state police and those boys turn the car inside out check and making sure the repair was done 100%,so yeah you gotta get that fixed first

Hopefully your insurance company will take salvage titles. I know some of them wont because of extra costs that can come up.

Wow, some insurance company totaled that car? Wow.... body damage that really has no effect on normal operation. Plus is FL that would cost you a GT of $500 to fix. But low coverage will do that in some cases.
