Just out of curiosity and to help completely drain my gas tank in preperation for race gas, how many miles have you driven with your gas warning light on solid (after it stops flickering).

I have a 2g and I've only went at least 15 miles with it on solid, I think i've went 20 before but I know you can at least go 15. Of course it will vary but I'd like to have an estimate.

One time, I went 75 miles with the light on. I only drove that far because I was headed to the track and I had a gas can full of vp 110 in the trunk. When I got to the track, I still had gas left. But, I learned that never race w/ the gas light because the fuel pump will starve under acceleration. I logged many times and the result is low timing when the light is on. Put of couple of gallons in her to turn the light off, and it always run faster.

I've only been brave enough to go 30 miles with the light on. Once I had the opporitunity to swap fuel pumps after the light had come on, and it looked like there was about two gallons left in the tank.

Why don't you get a 2 gallon gas can from walmart or something, fill it up with gas, and put it in the trunk. Then drive until you can't drive no 'mo'. See what the mileage was between the gas light going on, and your car sputtering to a stop. Fill up the gas tank with the extra gas you have in the can, then you can tell us all about it.

Pff, some explorer you'd make. "Oh, Mr. Magellan, what if we used the stars to determine where we are?" Some damned fun you'd be on a boat. Pfff.

Real adventurers use the Kramer method. You just _dare_ the bastard to run out of gas.

LOL that was the episode where kramer was test driving the saab jerry was going to buy. kramer and the sales guy ran out of gas and kramer hopped out of the car and started walking. leaving the sales guy with the car stranded on the side of the highway.

Which is exactly why you try to always have a girl in the car. One who likes walking.

it depends on how you drive and what the conditions are. on the highway i can expect to go about 60 more miles. in the city maybe only about 40. with my foot in it still about 20 more miles

I just did a fuel pump swap on my 1G FWD. I drained out as much gas as I could into a gas can. Then I pulled the pump assembly mounting bolt off the bottom of the tank so ALL the gas was drained. I swapped pumps, poured about 1/2 gallon back into the tank, then drove it straight to the gas station. I filled it up to the filler neck and it took 14.68 gallons. The last time I drove it until the light was on solid it took 13.5 gallons, so I could've kept going another 30 miles.

BTW I got 424 miles out of that tank, maybe I'll pull a Kramer and see if I can get 450 miles out of the next tank!

when i put my guages on i messed up the fuel guage. it wont go under 1/4. i tried everything, even tooh the guage out, but now it still wont go under 1/4. so if i run it under 1/4 for about a day, the gas light comes on, im a big worrier so as soon as the light comes on its to the closest station i go. but i now fill er up when she hits 1/4, just to be safe.

if your fuel pump's little white filter is semi-blocking the floater from coming all the way down will the gas light still come on or does it read by the floater only ???

On the 1G the low fuel warning light sensor is separate from the float arm, but on the AWD cars the float arm moves very close to the sensor, so if it was bent during a pump upgrade it could stop the float from moving all the way down. If the float was bent the other way it could hit the pump inlet filter. It's not that hard to pull the fuel pump on an AWD car and check it.

With my current mods Ive done about 37miles. If I were to go when the lights starts going on and kinda flickers I bet Id see close to 75 or more. Otherwise 37 is my record with it steady and the needle buried...the car feels like doggy doo when it comes on...maybe its just me.

Ps...shouldnt this be in another forum??

On the 2g, the low fuel light it also seperate from the fuel gauge. As far as running the car with the low light on, I've ran it several times at the drag stip when the car has been on the light for a while and haven't noticed any performance problems. You almost have to run it with the light on if you drain your tank and than only put a couple gallons of race gas in.

Usually that light means you have at least 2-4 gallons of gas left, before it is completely gone and you have to push yourself home :D
