Ok now I searched for this and couldn't find my answer. So I am apologizing in advance if this is not the right place to post. Anyway I am selling the SS and looking for a 4g63. I want a awd but I have found a really nice fwd tsi close by. I won't have the SS for much longer so I need a car. Now I obviously know a stock awd will beat a stock fwd cause they launch way better. I am wondering though if it is possible to build a decently fast fwd and run in the 13's or should I just wait longer for a awd. Money wise what would be a cheaper bet to run 13's?

If you are trying to race, then AWD is usually the better option.

The problem is I need the car soon and the Fwd is so nice. What would it take to run 13's in a fwd

13's are definitely attainable in a fwd (without too many traction issues), but I'm guessing you will want more once you get there and going much faster then that would be much easier and cheaper with awd.

14B 16G will get you there in the low 13's assuming you know how to drive. The problem with FWD is that you really need an LSD, and drag radials may cause you to break some stuff up front because of terrible wheel hop. I would wait for an AWD, especially if you want a drag car.

Ya I just want a fast reliable daily driver that when I need to can hold its own on the street. I like the 14b idea but is it just a swap or do I have to upgrade other things

just at the dsm shootout the other day some of the fastest times came from fwd monsters, and unless you can PROPERLY launch awd can mess up a run, also fwd are lighter, transmissions are "usually" cheaper, and a 13 run is no problem, just gotta be easy on the pedal off the launch or your sit there an spin

a fwd would be worth it becuase regardless it is a dsm, unless your keen on awd. the fwd should give you plenty rush.

p.s. if you live in a snowy region, just go awd, thats when there is no other way.

Since you are you to this gig you ought to take it easy and go one step at a time otherwise you are going to bite more than you can chew.Fwd is fine untill you get the feel for it and you think an fwd is not enough. You got to keep in mind that awd requires more attention and the parts are harder to find besides being more expensive.

exactly ^ awd drive trains for these are one of the reasons they are known for the unreliability, asides from the infamous yoke's that go bad and sensitive transfer cases the drive train most likely hasnt' been maintained. fluids never changed in the rear that are not longer providing any lubrication can lead to grinding. and unless you know the awd drive train on these i suggest sticking with what wont give you a ton of problems, hey its a dsm, the less problems in one, the better.

and to learn more about the awd drive train if your interested, check Visual Frequently Answered Questions - Home Page go to the drive-train thumbnail and read away

IMO a 14b turbo, drag radials as i mentioned earlier or even slicks (but dont attempt a burnout), mbc, and a good clutch because your gonna have to burn the clutch alot in a fwd and not just dump it to get off of the line good. That should net you a low 13 to high 12 with a god tune.

If you get an evo 3 16g, you wouldnt have to upgrade fuel system for wastegate pressure, maybe just a fmic, but if you wanted to crank up the boost you would need bigger injectors, fuel pump, afpr, and something to tune with

I had fwd, i wasnt satisfied with the wheelhop killing 3 of my transmissions so i converted my car to awd. Fwd=wheelhop/slower 60ft AWD=leave the line and hop like a frog

buy the front wheel drive then just get you an all wheel drive tranny and just convert it u can find these parts for it at dsmgraveyard.com im turning a rs eclipse into a gsx just wondering if i can just buy the front clip from a gst and drop the motor str8 in it has the ecu and wire harness already with it

Youre gonna want to buy a gsx donor car to the conversion. take the mounts and put them in your engine bay, you might be able to swap over the clips idk, ive never had my front clip off and im not really fimiliar with n/t engine bays. I can tell you youve got a a job ahead of you. It took me and my dad over a month, 8 hours a day to strip the parts car, strip my car, take out all of the bolts, drill the spot welds, mount the rearend and driveshaft. I mean its a pain, and if you dont get a parts car its gonna be hard to find all of the parts youre gonna need.

If you plan on really doing something with the car I'd wait for an awd, but if it's just gonna be a quick/fun dd then find something as clean as possible.

rushing on a car decision is a bad idea.

research. check the car out, top to bottom. check everything.

also quit looking locally. sometimes the perfect car is more than 50 miles away from you. i have been known to drive to chicago to buy a ws6. and I live 45 minutes north of nashville in kentucky.

and go awd, you wont be dissapointed.

if you are coming from a SS, a FWD will kill you both physically, and emotionally.

From a dead stop, a AWD will be faster. From a roll the FWD can put more power down to the ground. There is less drivetrain loss in a FWD then there is in a AWD.

I love my FWD, i have beaten SRT4's from rolls at about 30ish. The car hooks and pulls real nice.

FWD is also better for the snow.

Now, if you want a AWD, make it a 1g at least. Then it can be as fast as possible

Looks like your from Michigan, so AWD would be nice to have even though FWD is descent in the snow. I came from Washington State and had no troubles in the snow at all with winter tires of coarse. I would wait for the AWD but if you need a car now and the GST had been properly maintained and taken care of, I see it being really quick with a 16G. There's nothing like the launch of a powerful AWD, just something that can't be given from a FWD. Either way you will run 13's with a different turbo and the correct supporting mods. Which includes proper maintenance and a boost leak test. Read the Tech articles and use Vfaq.com to help you choose your car. I agree with Rock1t, go AWD, or bust. Pick Carefully!
