I haven't taken a very very good look at a 2nd gen before, but I've never noticed too much of a difference between the engine bays with a 1st gen. Anyway, the 1st gen fuel filter is mounted on the firewall on the passenger side. Just follow the line from the fuel rail and you'll see it.
