Front Axle Won't Come Out!

So I'm trying to remove my transmission and the passenger side front axle will not disconnect from the tranny!! I've bent two screwdrivers and hit myself in the face with a crowbar so far trying to get it to pop out but nothing's working Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the help!

I have had this happened to me twice the first time the c-clip swelled and it would come out at all we had to pull the lower ball joint and pull out the cv shaft with the tranny then we could work with it but be careful because it is easy to damage the seal and housing the second i used a ball joint removal tool and that did the job good luck

Have you tried heating/cooling?

Expanding or contracting one of the surfaces can cause it to come out.

Basic concept is if you heat a nut it expands and if you cool the bolt it contracts and the nut can move much more freely.

if its an lsd its a bi***. Its not likely to come out if you have an lsd because if the way the fluid jackets are in the differential where the axles slide in.

Take a large cold chisel and tap it in between the trans case and the shoulders of the axle. It will wedge the axle out of the trans.

What's an lsd? Also, I'm planning on just removing the lower ball joint and removing the tranny with the passenger side axle still in it. If it is an lsd like you said, how am I supposed to get it out?

limited slip differential. you likely dont have one. I just happened to get one from a galant jdm trans. they were never produced in our cars factory but in jdm cars factory some were lsd. you probably need to give it a bigger wack. i leave the axle in and take it apart at the boot because i get frustrated and reseal the boot.

Do you have a compressor and air hammer?? If not, see if you can borrow one. If you use a blunt tip, I should come out with a few squeezes of the trigger. I had th same problem, that's how I got it out

BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU DO THIS!!!!! It can tear and destroy the clip inside the transmission and cause damage.

The key is to use a chisel to help push the axle out, remove the chisel and manually turn the axle 90 degrees. This will help to walk out the axle, be careful and patient

I've had to use a small chain or cable and wrap it around the base near the tranny and use a slide hammer to pull it out.

I've decided I'm just going to try and lower the tranny with the axle still in it and then figure out what to do then. But after ten hours working on a single axle I've decided to call it quits for tonight and start again tomorrow. I'll keep y'all posted and if that doesn't work, then those are some great ideas! It ended up comming off after the car found its way on a lift.

use a proper pry bar, go to harbor freight and buy the biggest one they have.. should be a couple feet. it will come out..

must be the jdm one i have. ive never been about to get the axle out with out removing the clip with a screw driver from the other axle port of the transmission.

So it turns out that the retards who owned the car before me bought an "aftermarket" axle and installed it. Unfortunately, the clips on the end of it inside the transmission are too big, so that axle will never disconnect from the transmission Thanks for all the input guys!

The key is to try to pop the axle out, rather than pry it. Use a pry bar between the axle and the trans and try to pop it out with quick impacts away from the tranny.

Haha, trust me I tried that and pretty much everything else. I was able to get the transmission out with the axle still in it (don't ask me how, it was a pita!) and then took it over to Jack's Transmissions. They specialize in DSMs. He told me that it was an aftermarket axle and that there's no way that it's going to come out, so I take his word for it.

I have had this problem before. Sometimes if you rotate the axle in 1/8 or less increments the clip will slide down to where it will come out. But until it does break out the dollar bills and the swear jar.

If you have AWD, you have LSD. It's just an added safety thing they added to ALL AWD DSM's. Read your owner's manual, and it will tell you so.
