Just bought a 91 GST and was just wondering what are some free mods you guys are doing with your 1G’s.

cut away the stock can to expose air filter, take off MAS and take out paper star shaped silencer, look in the tubes for stock boost controller located on the top of the air can and extract the little plug to make it as open as the other nipple.

Before you even start with the free mods, make sure it's in top running shape. Change all the fluids, get an alignment, replace the plugs ($10 for new ngk's), and find a fellow dsmer that will let you borrow his pressure tester (to look for vacuum leaks). While your replacing your fluids, check the coolant hoses to make sure they aren't about to go (they'll start swelling up near the clamps).

Awesome answer. :thumb:

Nice to see you over here.

In my case hacking the air filter housing resulted in higher intake temps, but slightly better throttle response. I definitely recommend removing the star silencer. Don't throw away the lower honeycomb if you do decide to remove it - you WILL run leaner and increase chances of knock.

Nice looking 1g!

The logger is my friend :thumb:

I have a 91 tsi awd and was wondering,if removing the lower honeycomb makes the car run leaner, can i compensate by removing the bov return pipe to the intake? i am going to remove it for a few weeks just for some noise but then im putting it back on.Since i heard it runs rich after letting your foot off the gas,i thought removing the lower honeycomb might compensate for this.Any help ?

As for free mods, here is what i did to mine : hacked aircan, removed silencer, removed both pipes from the intake pipe, and replaced one with a breather filter, and removed complete cruise control system. If you have any more questions as to other free stuff i did to my dsm hit me up any time or email me.

weight reduction is free, and im not a fan of hacking the mass, wouldnt recommend it unless your just removing the star shaped silencer, i wouldnt mess with the honey combs though. Well maybe thats because idont like doing stuff that tricks the ecu ( safc ) thats why i went with the chipped route.

Removing the lower screen makes the car run leaner all the time, and at WOT that can be catastrophic. That short blast of rich mixture between shifts is cooling the pistons, etc. when they least need it. This is not an acceptable way to compensate for the need for fun noises.

That said, back to the original poster, do all the aforementioned maintenence stuff including checking the condition of the timing belt. The only "free mods" I can truly testify to feeling a significant difference with, are the BCS restrictor removal, and air can hack. I'm not saying the others didn't help, I just can't in clear concience say they did, & I didn't get a chance to do any comparative testing.

Before you get started take everyones advice on maintenance while you can afford it, it could come bite you in the ass when you aren't prepared TRUST ME!
